$133,991 - $141,543 (G09) plus 17% Superannuation Located at Curtin University Kalgoorlie Campus Job Reference: 763699 Your New Role The WA School of Mines: Minerals, Energy and Chemical Engineering (WASM: MECE) is seeking an experienced Research Engineer to join our highly successful Rock Mechanics Research Group, part of the Mining 3 Research Centre in Kalgoorlie.
This position offers a unique opportunity to lead cutting-edge research in rock mechanics and contribute to the mining industry's advancement.
The position requires high level knowledge of laboratory and field experiments.
This includes the INSTRON rock testing research facility and involves coordinating the Rock Mechanics Research Laboratory, development of research facilities, hands-on design and development of rock mechanics test equipment, and expert support of Post Graduate research students.

Key Responsibilities: Design & Development of Instrumentation: Design, prototype, commission, and test rock mechanics instrumentation to enhance research capabilities while ensuring compliance with ISRM standards.
Research Plan Management: Lead the development and implementation of the Group's research and development plan, engaging in collaborative projects to drive productivity through publications, grants, and industry relationships.
Fault Investigation & Remediation: Manage the investigation, diagnosis, and remediation of various rock mechanics instrumentation faults and failures, conducting field work at multiple research sponsor mine sites.
Consultation & Guidance: Act as a project consultant by providing expert advice and guidance to Undergraduate and Post Graduate students on complex testing and equipment utilisation.
Client Relations & Technical Support: Assist with client relations and provide high-level technical support nationally and internationally, ensuring optimal operational efficiency at mine sites.
Staff Management & Mentorship: Mentor junior engineering and technical support staff while overseeing the management of the Group's laboratory at WASM - Kalgoorlie campus.
Reporting & Best Practices Implementation: Ensure all test reports are clear and timely, while compiling and implementing procedures and best practices to support laboratory operations in alignment with industry standards.

Selection Criteria: Essential A postgraduate qualification in Mining Engineering, Civil Engineering in Rock Mechanics, Geology or Geotechnical, or a related field and extensive relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
High level practical knowledge of rock testing, geological mapping and rock mass characterisation, mining methods and ground support.
Demonstrated experience in developing novel approaches to addressing mining and geotechnical problems.
High level practical experience in open pit and underground mining with substantial supervisory experience Good computing and programming skills, desirably extending to data acquisition and analysis, and simulation environments.
Willingness to contribute to a cross-disciplinary team, and an ability to initiate novel technology solutions.
Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills with the ability to liaise with a diverse range of people.
Ability to guide and mentor junior technical staff and assist research students.
Demonstrated commitment to applying relevant and applicable policies, procedures and legislation in the day-to-day performance of the functions of this position Desirable A PhD in a Geotechnical related field.
A high level of familiarity with Rock Mechanics Group large scale testing of ground support.
