The EmployerOur clients own a highly productive and well-appointed beef breeding and finishing property that covers 3,400 acres of productive sandy loam soils in Western Victoria, adjacent to the Grampians National Park. The business focuses on producing a superior herd of commercial Angus beef cattle, with around 500-600 Angus females being joined each year via natural mating and artificial insemination.
Additionally, over 200 acres of hay crops are grown yearly in conjunction with an annual pasture renovation program; all sowing and pasture/crop establishment are done in-house with contractors for silage production. There is potential for improvement across genetics, pasture, and paddock development to allow for increased carrying capacity. The owner would like to involve you in strategic planning and objective setting. They are available to assist with the operational tasks when necessary. There are no other employees, and contractors are engaged as required.
The RoleWe seek a diligent and self-motivated individual to fill the position of Working Farm Manager. Candidates must have a passion for beef cattle breeding, sound judgment, strong communication skills, and exceptional abilities in low-stress cattle management to be considered for this opportunity. Experience in rotational grazing, pasture improvement, fencing, hay and silage production, general machinery maintenance, and building upkeep is also required.
The Farm Manager's primary responsibility is overseeing all farm operations related to animal health, welfare, and production. This includes managing artificial insemination (AI) programs, improving pastures and crops for fodder, monitoring and maintaining water systems, maintaining and constructing farm infrastructure, and overseeing farm machinery and equipment. A strong background in beef cattle production, excellent mechanical knowledge, and experience in sowing crops and coordinating with and managing contractors are essential for this role.
Your main objective is to ensure the farm operates efficiently and sustainably while meeting the business's production goals. You will be responsible for optimising the enterprise as a critical driver of productivity and profitability. To achieve this, you must have a hands-on work ethic and take ownership of the farm's success.
Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Cattle husbandry, including marking, feeding, drenching, weaning, and general animal health. Livestock marketing and selling. Grazing management (rotational) and pasture/crop establishment. Construction and maintenance of fencing. Fodder making, both silage and hay production. Regular reporting to owners as required, including reporting and maintaining livestock, pasture, and machinery records. Liaising with contractors. Machinery Maintenance.
