Are you passionate about wildlife conservation and ready for a unique career development opportunity? We are excited to offer a 6-month secondment position for an enthusiastic and dedicated individual to join our team as Elephant Keeper. About the Role:
This is a rare opportunity to work closely with one of the world’s most incredible species. You will join an experienced team of dedicated Asian Elephant Keepers and develop your skills by learning from the team as well as the animals. As an Elephant Keeper, you will be responsible for the daily care, health, and enrichment of our elephants, contributing to their overall welfare and conservation efforts.
To ensure alignment with our core values and commitment to fostering an inclusive environment, we will initially offer this position as a 6-month secondment with the potential to become permanent, allowing us to assess team fit, support individual growth and ensure optimal animal welfare.
Key Responsibilities:
* Daily husbandry tasks including feeding, cleaning, and health monitoring.
* Enrichment activities to stimulate natural behaviours.
* Assisting with veterinary care as required.
* Educating visitors and supporting conservation messaging.
* Working within a team on a 7-day rotating roster .
About You:
We are seeking individuals who are:
* Passionate and dedicated about animal care and welfare.
* Physically fit and able to work in a demanding team environment.
* Experienced or keen to develop skills in large mammal care.
* Excellent communicators and team players.
* Sees value engaging with visitors from informal conversations through to public encounters.
* Experienced or keen to develop their skills in animal training and behaviour.
Requirements:
* Currently employed at Zoos SA as a keeper.
* Experience in animal husbandry (experience with large mammals is an advantage, but not essential).
* Strong commitment to animal welfare and conservation.
* Flexibility to work on a rotating roster, including weekends and public holidays.
* A proactive attitude and willingness to learn through constructive feedback and critiquing training sessions.
* Certificate III in Wildlife and Exhibited Animal Care desirable but not essential.
