LET'S EXPLORE THE JOB The Senior Environmental Assessment Officer plays a crucial role within the Environmental Systems Department, providing advice on planning approval pathways and undertaking technical review and preparing environmental assessments for Council projects. You will work collaboratively across Council offering expert technical guidance on environmental assessments, managing projects from an environmental perspective to ensure implementation of safeguards. You will ensure compliance with approval processes, licensing requirements, and planning legislation throughout the project's lifecycle. Some key responsibilities of the role include: Prepare, review and communicate environmental assessments for Council projects and activities including activity checklists, minor works review of environmental factors and environmental impact assessments. Review, analyse and execute annual reviews and renewals of licensing and general approvals for Council work programs. Evaluate, update and communicate Council's environmental assessment templates to ensure they are in line with current legislative requirements. Provide technical advice throughout the project and activity lifecycle to ensure compliance with environmental safeguards, as outlined in approvals. Develop, train and motivate staff in the achievement of Council and department goals and policies relating to environmental risk and assessment. Assume responsibility for financial management of assigned projects, including managing budget expenditure and review processes of up to $3 million. We're looking for a proactive and professional candidate with extensive experience in preparing and reviewing environmental assessments. You should have a strong technical grasp of relevant legislation, regulations, and guidelines, along with the ability to navigate complex legal frameworks related to environmental protection. Your skills in analysing, interpreting, and presenting data to diverse stakeholders as well as your capacity to negotiate and influence positive environmental outcomes will be key. With excellent project management abilities, a driven mindset, and strong analytical and problem-solving skills, you'll work collaboratively across Council to deliver high-quality services to the community. You will also meet the following criteria: Bachelor's degree in town planning, environmental science or equivalent qualification relevant to the field of expertise. Extensive and demonstrable experience in preparation and review of environmental assessments. Knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations and guidelines as applicable to environmental assessments, ecology and biodiversity. Proven experience and knowledge associated with the development and management of environmental approvals and conditions. Highly developed written communication skills, including the ability to produce high quality documentation and communicate with a range of internal and external stakeholder groups. Demonstrated experience working collaboratively and driving continual business improvement initiatives.
