About the School
The School of Law is committed to excellence and innovation in teaching, research and community engagement. It has a research focus on Public and constitutional law, Human Rights and Social Justice issues and a leading clinical program through the Justice Clinic.
The School offers LLB, JD and combined LLB undergraduate degrees, and an LLM degree, as well as providing law teaching for business degrees at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. LLB programs are taught at Parramatta and Campbelltown and there are approximately 1,600 EFTSL in the Law School.
The WSU Justice Clinic is the university’s community legal service and internal student legal service, and runs the School of Law’s experiential learning programs. It is at the core of the School’s strategy for achieving impactful community-driven research, quality legal education and law graduates, and community service and engagement.
About the role
The School of Law is seeking an experienced professional to fill the role of Managing Solicitor/Clinical Supervisor.
The Managing Solicitor / Clinical Supervisor will provide advice, casework, law reform and policy work in areas of law relevant to the WSU Justice Clinic under the supervision of the Director & Principal Solicitor. The Managing Solicitor / Clinical Supervisor is responsible for managing the Student Legal Service (SLS), and for providing legal advice and supervising legal advice provided to students accessing the SLS 2 days per week. The Managing Solicitor / Clinical Supervisor will also work collaboratively with the WSU Justice Clinic team members to teach WSU students undertaking the experiential learning subjects of the WSU Justice Clinic, by supervising the provision of casework, law reform and policy work and community legal education with students in the subjects.
The Managing Solicitor / Clinical Supervisor will also be responsible for supporting the Director & Principal Solicitor in executing the strategic plan of the WSU Justice Clinic, including in developing and delivering quality experiential learning programs and curriculum, engaging with and developing relationships with industry and community partners, and promoting the work of the WSU Justice Clinic.
This position works closely with WSU School of Law students in a best practice experiential learning model.
About You
The successful candidate will have extensive experience in teaching within a tertiary education setting, including a proven track record of supervising legal work performed by others and students in a legal environment. They will have demonstrated extensive experience as a Managing Solicitor, providing advice and casework, with specialised knowledge in areas relevant to the WSU Justice Clinic’s and Student Legal Service’s work. Additionally, will have proven experience in law reform and policy work. The candidate will have previous experience in a managerial or supervisory role, showcasing well-developed communication skills and the ability to liaise effectively with students, clients, management, staff, and external agencies. They will have a strong background in working with disadvantaged groups, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people with disabilities, and individuals from culturally and linguistically diverse communities and will possess excellent organisational, time management, and administrative skills, with a proven ability to work and lead a team, monitor workflows, prioritise tasks, and meet deadlines.
Working with Children Check:
It is a mandatory requirement for any incumbent of this position to have a current NSW Employee Working with Children Clearance in accordance with the NSW Child Protection (Working with Children) Act 2012.
