The team's practice spans both advice work and litigation. The advice work includes complex advice on the application, interpretation and development of legislation, as well as on various areas of exclusive VGSO work such as federal and State constitutional law and Treaty. Its litigation focuses primarily on constitutional matters (usually in the High Court) and judicial review proceedings.The team's subject areas include:State and federal constitutional law;The application, interpretation and development of legislation (including in administrative decision-making);Public sector governance and integrity;Integrity body (including parliamentary) inquiries;Victoria's First Peoples, including Treaty; andJudicial review of administrative decisionsAbout the roleAn exciting opportunity has become available for a lawyer with public law experience to join our team to assist in responding to the growing demand for our legal services. You will provide quality legal services to government clients and will have the opportunity to work on high profile public interest matters. The role offers a mix of litigation and advice work in complex public law matters relating to the exercise and regulation of government powers. You will be part of a supportive, well-functioning team and be given opportunities to learn and grow as a lawyer at VGSO.Skills and experienceProven ability to provide written and oral advice on public law (preferably including constitutional law)Experience conducting administrative and public law litigation mattersExcellent legal research and analytical skillsGood interpersonal and communication skills, and ability to both work in a team and autonomously (under supervision)Enthusiasm for working in a government law office and on novel legal issuesExperience in acting for government, local government or statutory authorities would be advantageousVGSO offers an inclusive, collegiate and collaborative work environment where you will be well-supported and mentored to develop your knowledge.
