About the Specialist Palliative Care Services Unit
The MHHS Specialist Palliative Care Service (SPCS) aims to improve the quality of life for patients and their families facing the problems associated with life-limiting illness. This can be achieved through the prevention and relief of suffering by means of early identification and treatment of pain and other problems, in the physical, psychological and spiritual domains.
SPCS provides palliative care support to inpatients at MHHS, outpatient clinics and a community program to assist patients and carers in their own home within a 45km radius of Mackay. Specialist palliative care support in the Isaac, Bowen and Whitsunday regions, are provided by the Specialist Palliative Care Rural Telehealth Service (SPaRTa) team based at the Townsville Hospital and Health Service. A multidisciplinary team working within specialist palliative care provides holistic, co-ordinated care to patients and their carers across the care continuum, with close collaboration with other health professionals.
