Job description: The Shutdown Controls Engineer is responsible for managing and coordinating the maintenance shutdowns of equipment and systems. This includes the development and execution of plans to ensure the reliability and integrity of plant assets. The role requires extensive technical knowledge of control systems, strong project management skills, and a focus on minimising downtime while ensuring safety and compliance with operational standards.
Responsibilities:
* Ensuring controls for projects comply with company standards;
* using project control systems and procedures to ensure cost, progress and scope control on projects;
* establishing key performance indicators to benchmark individual & collective project performance;
* Develop detailed shutdown schedules and work plans for preventive and corrective maintenance.
* Coordinate with different departments (operations, safety, procurement) to ensure all aspects of the shutdown are aligned.
* Manage shutdown timelines to minimise production downtime.
* Monitor and assess the condition of control systems and other key equipment to determine maintenance needs.
* Analyse data from equipment and control systems to predict potential failures and implement proactive measures.
* Collaborate with the asset management team to prioritise equipment upgrades or replacements.
* Ensure all shutdown activities comply with health, safety, and environmental regulations.
* Develop and implement risk mitigation strategies for shutdown processes.
* Perform safety audits and ensure proper lockout/tagout procedures are in place.
* Maintain accurate records of shutdown activities, including equipment performance data and post-shutdown reports.
* Prepare and present detailed reports on shutdown outcomes, including recommendations for future improvements.
* Identify and implement best practices for asset reliability and maintenance efficiency.
* Lead root cause analysis for equipment failures and develop long-term solutions.
Drive continuous improvement initiatives to extend asset life and reduce unplanned downtime.
Technical Skills:
* Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
* Minimum of 5 years of experience in shutdown management, asset management, or control systems within heavy industry, preferably in coal mining or similar environments.
* Proficiency in control systems such as SCADA, PLCs, DCS.
