The Shire itself covers an area of nearly 65,000 sq km with a population of 2,000. The regions two main centres are the towns of Karumba, a beautiful fishing village and Normanton the hub of the region.About the RoleAn exciting newly created opportunity has arisen for an experienced Chief Operating Officer (COO) to provide strategic leadership within a dynamic local government organisation. The role involves overseeing a broad range of critical functions to ensure the continued success of council operations and the delivery of essential services to the community.The COO will manage key business support areas including finance, governance, ICT, and capital projects, while also driving organisational growth through strategic planning and operational improvement. Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer, the successful candidate will be a key member of the Executive Leadership Team, contributing to the long-term vision and strategy of the Council.This role requires a highly skilled leader with proven experience in a senior management position within local government or a similar sector. The successful candidate will have a strong focus on people management, financial stewardship, and the ability to drive change while fostering a high-performance culture.Responsibilities:Lead the development and execution of strategic plans and initiatives.Oversee financial management, including budget preparation and capital projects.Manage corporate governance, ICT systems, and business support functions.Drive operational improvements, service delivery, and organisational efficiency.Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including government and community groups.Ensure compliance with statutory requirements and manage organisational risks.Skills and Experience requiredTertiary qualifications in finance, business, project management, or local government.Extensive senior leadership experience in local government or a similar environment.Strong capability in financial management, strategic planning, and organisational development.Proven ability to lead high-performing teams and manage diverse functions.Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.BenefitsThis is a rare opportunity to make a significant contribution to a thriving community while advancing your career in a senior leadership role.
