Data Privacy Team
A&O Shearman’s Risk function, led by partner Simon Fuge, is comprised of teams of market-leading experts and is at the heart of the sustainability and success of our firm. It has a core responsibility to uphold the values of A&O Shearman and support the strategic objectives of the business. Our lawyers and industry experts provide high quality legal and risk advice to the global firm, its senior management, governance bodies and partners.
The mission of the Data Privacy Team is to foster a strong culture of data protection compliance throughout the firm, while providing pragmatic and business-focused advice in a highly regulated area. The team:
1. designs and maintains a global programme of measures ensuring on-going compliance with privacy laws globally
2. advises on data governance and data handling issues throughout the data lifecycle
3. advises the firm on cyber risk and data incident response
4. advises on risk management and governance in relation to the firm’s AI strategy and internal deployment
What you will do
A&O Shearman is seeking an experienced individual to form part of the firm’s global Data Privacy Team and support all aspects of the work of the firm’s Chief Privacy Officer. It is a broad, fast-paced and challenging privacy and data governance role. The successful candidate will carry out tasks which draw on a wide skillset. The role would be suited to lawyers of 4 to 6 years PQE.
The key aspects of the role will be to:
5. advise and guide colleagues across the firm on privacy and data protection issues and policies
6. provide input on data handling and governance issues
7. assist in the support and maintenance of the existing global programme of measures designed to comply with privacy laws globally
8. support data incident response
9. establish and maintain good relations with key stakeholders, particularly in the APAC region, to help support and roll out changes to the privacy compliance programme and to promote and develop data governance best practice
10. help to manage, support and deliver work designed to comply with recent changes to data protection, privacy and security laws in APAC and Europe
11. conduct data privacy impact assessments
12. work closely with a range of stakeholders on technology and data innovations to help ensure good data handling practices and privacy by design
13. develop and deliver training and communication plans to drive and embed knowledge and awareness
14. create and deliver presentations and reports
15. help to create and maintain policies, guidance and pro-forma documentation in connection with data protection compliance and data governance best practice within the firm
Who we are looking for
Essential
The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate the following skills and experience:
16. a strong university degree
17. strong experience in providing directive and pragmatic advice on data privacy, information security and data handling issues to a wide range of business stakeholders
18. experience of working in an international corporate or professional services environment
19. the ability to understand, explain and advise on technical processes using business-friendly language
20. excellent IT skills (Microsoft Office suite of applications and other software, such as eDiscovery or other specialist software)
21. a proven ability to work independently and proactively and to manage and prioritise a busy workload
22. self-motivation and the ability to manage new and varied challenges
23. excellent written and verbal communication skills
24. excellent attention to detail
25. a collaborative approach and the ability to work well in a small team and on cross-departmental projects
Desirable
26. a relevant data privacy qualification such as CIPP/A, CIPP/E or CIPM
27. experience of working in a risk function or equivalent
