About the opportunity
This is an exciting opportunity for a registered veterinarian to work with a diverse range of disease surveillance and National animal health programs within the Animal Biosecurity and Welfare branch. Field veterinarians play a critical role in surveillance and emergency animal disease preparedness which underpins Western Australia’s extensive livestock market access. This role will provide scientifically based advice on livestock disease diagnosis, prevention and control and help provide a rapid response to any emergency animal disease incident in Western Australia in accordance with state policies and procedures.
You will work collaboratively with all sectors of the livestock industry and lead initiatives or contribute to protecting the cattle industry in Northern Australia from significant disease events. You will also be required to collect surveillance data in order to support Australia’s declaration of freedom from many trade sensitive exotic diseases that underpin the WA export market: These positions will work closely with pastoralists and pastoral region veterinarians to enhance Northern Australia’s biosecurity and surveillance systems.
As a Veterinarian you will investigate residue detections and implement surveillance and control programs while working with a team of skilled Veterinary and Biosecurity Officers to support WA’s animal biosecurity.
There are currently two (2) permanent positions available for immediate filling.
1. Veterinary Officer (Field) – Kununurra (SCL 2)
2. Veterinary Officer (Field) – Broome (SCL 3)
We are looking for individuals with:
3. a degree in Veterinary Science (obtained from an Australian university or recognised equivalent), and current recognised registration (or able to obtain prior to commencement) with the Veterinary Surgeons Board of Western Australia.
4. knowledge and experience in animal disease control, this includes the ability to investigate disease, carry out clinical and necropsy diagnostics and residue sampling.
5. knowledge of surveillance methods to help support Australian national surveillance programs. the ability to work collaboratively with local and community groups to implement operational plans and responses.
6. current vaccination or willingness to be vaccinated for Influenza A and Q Fever.
7. the physically fitness to carry out field veterinary investigations.
8. a current C or C-A class drivers license.
9. a willingness to travel and stay away from home overnight on occasions to undertake surveillance activities
