The key duties of the position include:The RoleNavy Data and Information Branch is looking for an EL 1 Data Manager who can collaborate across our multi-disciplinary team to understand stakeholder needs and deliver fit-for-purpose data and information solutions from multiple information and data sources. As a Data Manager, you will play a crucial role in leading data-driven initiatives and fostering a culture of evidence-based decision-making within our organisation.
Working collaboratively with stakeholders across the Data Division, stream data spokes, and stream data clients, you will drive strategic planning efforts, provide expert guidance, and facilitate effective communication between policy and data domains. Your leadership will be instrumental in enhancing organisational performance and achieving strategic objectives through the effective utilisation of data resources.
Operating with a high level of autonomy, you will support senior leadership in strategic planning and championing a culture of innovation. In addition, you may lead a small team and build a collaborative working environment, enhancing the organisation’s data capabilities.
About our TeamThe Navy Data and Information Branch within Navy Headquarters supports Deputy Chief of Navy with the development and implementation of the Defence enterprise solution into the Navy organisation. This includes the Navy Data & Information Management and data analytic programs and capabilities.
The Navy Data Synchronisation directorate is an integrated team of military, Australian Public Servants and contractors that provide governance and assurance support to Director General Navy Data and Information Branch. The Data Synchronisation directorate is newly restructured under the leadership of the Director – Navy Data Synchronisation to align with emerging Navy and Defence outcomes. The section engage with many stakeholders within Navy and Defence to achieve best practice within Navy and champion Navy’s interests within Defence.
Our Ideal CandidateOur ideal candidate will have:
Proven track record of high performance in leading strategic data initiatives, demonstrating strong leadership capabilities and the ability to drive results.
Strong data analysis skills with demonstrable experience in enabling the delivery of actionable insights through data visualisations, reports, and/or dashboards.
Excellent stakeholder management abilities, with effective communication skills for engaging with a diverse audience.
Strategic thinker capable of translating organisational goals into actionable plans.
A solid understanding of data governance, risk management, and compliance in a public sector context.
Ability to operate effectively with minimal direction, demonstrating initiative and sound judgment.
Experience in managing, mentoring, and developing high-performing teams is desirable but not essential.
Desired Capabilities - Knowledge and experience in some of the following, would be an advantage:
Tertiary qualifications in data science, statistics, business analytics, or a related field are highly desirable, or demonstrated relevant work experience.
Experience in managing and coordinating complex data projects, particularly in a public sector environment would be highly regarded.
Proficiency in data tools and software including SAP/ERP products, Excel, SQL, R, Python, or SAS is desirable.
EligibilitySecurity ClearanceApplicants must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance of 'Negative Vetting 1'.
