What you'd be doing in this role As Canva scales, change continues to be part of our DNA. This role is focused on:
Leading and coaching a team of 5 to 6 engineers focused on playback and video editing features.Helping the team deliver scalable and robust product features for Canva users around the world.Working closely with stakeholders to understand and contribute to the product roadmap.Driving the planning and refinement of cycle goals, ensuring alignment between the company, group, and teams.Fostering a culture of collaboration and advocating for the engineering needs of non-technical collaborators within the group.Owning and driving the delivery of large, cross-team, and cross-group initiatives and projects from ideation to completion, with autonomy and independence of decision making.You're probably a match if you have Previous experience in technical people leadership or mentorship of engineers.Commercial experience in a software development environment, with a focus on frontend technologies and associated libraries and frameworks. Our tech stack consists of JavaScript, HTML, CSS, React, TypeScript, MobX, WebGL, WebGPU, Web Assembly, web workers, etc.Firm grounding in computer science and engineering fundamentals including concurrency, multithreading, data structures, solution design, architecture, and design patterns.Experience working collaboratively with team members and communicating effectively.Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to break large projects down into smaller ones and deliver on them through others.Good writing and verbal communication skills.About the team The Video Editor team at Canva is enhancing video editing and social media content creation for millions of users. They're developing an intuitive platform that integrates with Canva's Visual Suite, making it easier for users to create professional content. This team manages user experiences for editing and playback, ensuring a smooth process for bringing ideas to life.
Video is a complex technical problem space that requires multiple parts of the software system to work seamlessly to deliver a smooth video editing, playback, and export experience to users. The Video Editor team works across multiple layers of the tech stack and has touchpoints with many other teams spanning beyond the video domain.
About the role The role involves coaching frontend engineers using TypeScript and leveraging technologies like WebGL and WebGPU to create a powerful video editing platform.
We are seeking someone who wants to be in the thick of it - working closely with other technical stakeholders to design and deliver elegant solutions to complex problems, being across technical designs and decisions and caring for the professional growth and development of the people they lead. You'll be managing a team of 5-6 engineers, growing individuals and leading the team to deliver our crazy big goals.
