About the Opportunity
The Nurse Unit Manager of this program leads a multidisciplinary team across SWSLHD of Child and Family Health Nurses and Clinical Nurse Educator, Aboriginal Health Workers, Occupational Therapist and Speech Pathologist that supports a culturally responsive health service for Aboriginal clients.
This role oversees the clinical elements of the Aboriginal Health Home Visiting program, also considering the psychosocial and cultural needs of families with children antenatal to school age. The Nurse Unit Manager role has responsibility for the standard of patient care in the unit and all other key accountability areas of the role.
The position reports to and works collaboratively with the HSM3 Aboriginal Program Co-ordinator position to ensure the program is operating effectively and that there is strong cultural and clinical governance.
What You'll be Doing
The Nursing Unit Manager is responsible for overseeing service delivery for Aboriginal Child and Family programs within Primary and Community Health ensuring care is culturally responsive, accessible and integrated.
The Aboriginal program follows the Maternal Early Childhood Sustained Home visiting model (MECSH) and works holistically in partnership with Aboriginal families from the antenatal period through to school age. It is an evidenced based intervention for families that utilizes a strengths based approach to address a range of vulnerabilities that can impact on maternal health and wellbeing and child health and developmental outcomes. A key focus of the program is supporting cultural identity and connections as a protective factor for families and children. Families are visited by their allocated Child and Family Health Nurse and Aboriginal Health Worker from the antenatal period until their child turns five years of age.
The position will with work collaboratively with the Aboriginal Program Manager to ensure the Aboriginal program is operating effectively and that there is strong cultural and clinical governance.
The Nursing Unit Manager (NUM) is in-charge of all aspects of the unit environment and takes overall responsibility for the standard of patient care in the unit. The NUM is pivotal to the coordination of patient care, unit management and leadership to ensure the delivery of high quality patient care and efficient use of resources.

1. Current Authority to Practice as a Registered Nurse with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA). Tertiary qualifications in Child and Family Health nursing with relevant experience deemed appropriate by SWSLHD.
2. Demonstrated management experience in leading staff and managing services in a relevant setting.
3. Demonstrated understanding of the range of issues that impact on the health and well-being of Aboriginal families and how they relate to the ongoing impacts of colonisation.
4. Demonstrated experience leading teams that deliver culturally responsive health services that meet the needs of Aboriginal families.
5. Proven ability to ensure the human, physical and financial resources of the unit are managed to provide safe, compassionate, quality care that is culturally responsive.
6. Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and engage with patients/consumers, carers and the multidisciplinary health care team to identify and ensure responsiveness of care needs.
7. Demonstrated capacity to interact with others in a personable and professional manner and manage conflicts and performance issues when they arise.
8. Demonstrated evidence of the use of critical thinking as it relates to the management of the unit and the delivery of evidenced based nursing care.
9. Demonstrated understanding and participation in risk management, work health and safety and quality improvement in the workplace.
10. Current unrestricted Australian drivers licence (P2 Licence Acceptable) subject to obtaining NSW drivers licence within 3 months of appointment.
