GEGAC Dental is seeking a reliable and energetic Dental Assistant to join our busy Dental surgery. The right person will work in the Dental clinic and the Smile Squad team. The successful candidate will have access to DHSV and Smile Squad training.

GEGAC is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation based on Gunaikurnai Country in Bairnsdale, Victoria. Consisting of about 160 staff, GEGAC is a Not for Profit organisation that delivers holistic services in the areas of Primary Health, Social Services, Elders & Disability and Early Childhood Education.
GEGAC is a child safe agency and has a zero tolerance of abuse or neglect of children and young people.
Position Purpose
To provide professional and quality dental assistance, clerical and reception duties to a busy Aboriginal Dental service. We are looking for someone reliable and knowledgeable about the issues that affect our community. You will be required to assist in the dental clinic, outreach and smile squad as needed.
Specifically, the role requires the provision of holistic assessment, support, and continuity of care to the client, carer, and family. Duties include reception duties when rostered and assisting the Dentist and Oral Health Therapist in your scope of practice as a Dental Assistant.
Key Selection Criteria
A demonstrated interest in, and understanding of, the family and health needs of the Aboriginal community and an understanding of local Aboriginal culture.
An understanding of the philosophy of and need for an Aboriginal Health Service.
Well-developed communication skills especially in regard to Aboriginal families.
Ability to maintain accurate documentation (written and electronic) of client history and data collection.
Demonstrated understanding of confidentiality issues pertaining to clients and client records.
A demonstrated knowledge and understanding of contemporary dental techniques.
Proven clinical skills.
Proven understanding of sterilisation, infection control and safe practice in providing dental services.
Demonstrated ability to work independently, be self-motivated and to also work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Demonstrated ability to proactively participate in team meetings and represent GEGAC on committees and forums relating to dental services.
Proven ability to promote the program with Dental and other health professionals to further promote the Gippsland & East Gippsland Aboriginal Co-operative Medical Services.
Proven ability to maintain a patient liaison and advocating role.
Proven organisational skills and a demonstrated ability to work unsupervised using initiative, with a strong sense of commitment.
Qualifications and Registrations Requirement (Essential or Desirable)
Driver licence ESSENTIAL
Minimum Certificate III Level Qualification in Dental Assisting or equivalent ESSENTIAL
Current First Aid Certificate ESSENTIAL
A satisfactory Working with Children Check and Fit2Work Police Check ESSENTIAL
A person of Aboriginal / Torres Strait Islander background DESIRABLE
Proof of COVID-19 vaccination to align with mandatory vaccination directive applying to authorised workers ESSENTIAL
