Muludja Remote Community is a small indigenous community, situated on the flood plains of the Margaret River, approximately 35km by gravel road, east of Fitzroy Crossing. The Traditional Owners of the land are the Gooniyandi people, who were originally located on the Fossil Downs Station side of the river. The present community site is on Gogo Station and was established in the early 1980’s. Muludja Remote Community School was established in 1991.
Muludja Remote Community School (ICSEA 611), a Level 3 Department of Education school, consists of 100% Aboriginal student enrolments. The school offers education to 27 students from Kindergarten to Year 6, where the WA Curriculum is used to plan, assess and report on student learning. The regional school improvement initiative, the Kimberley Schools Project, focuses on evidence-based explicit instruction and low-variance strategies. School priorities are based on the four KSP pillars of Targeted Teaching, Early Years, Attendance and Community Engagement. Positive Behaviour Strategies, Protective Behaviours and Two-Way Learning experiences are instilled in everyday culturally responsive practices. Students speak Kriol as their first language, Gooniyandi as their traditional language and Aboriginal English. Teachers respect and incorporate these languages while teaching and modelling Standard Australian English. An understanding of the educational and social challenges of a remote setting and being able to work in a culturally responsive manner are essential to this role.
