About our Team The Defence Digital Media (DDM) team provides critical imagery support aligned with Defence Australia's mission to inform, engage, and enhance the nation's defence through transparent and effective communication.
The team's primary function is to deliver high-quality imagery for internal communication, public affairs, and media.
DDM provides imagery capture and production for Defence senior leadership and enterprise-wide initiatives.
DDM coordinates imagery collation for major operations and events like Exercise Talisman Sabre and Anzac Day, while also managing the Defence Image Gallery and Defence YouTube channel.
They ensure all imagery meets strict technical and metadata standards and oversee the distribution of cleared imagery to Defence leadership, ministerial offices, and media outlets.
Additionally, the team provides technical guidance to Defence camera teams, manages copyright for external requests, and leads the national Digital Signage pilot.The Role Defence Digital Media (DDM) is looking for a skilled and experienced APS 5 Imagery Archivist and Rights Manager to join their team.
Imagery encompasses digital media, videos and photographic stills.
The Imagery Archivist and Rights Manager is part of a small specialist team working with official Defence public affairs digital media.
Your key role is to manage the archiving of imagery, including from digital and legacy analogue formats.
You would also support the research and retrieval of imagery from the archive for Defence and external productions.
As Rights Manager, you would coordinate requests from industry and external organisations to use Defence imagery, liaise with various internal Defence areas for clearances, and issue copyright licences.
Key Responsibilities: • Process public affairs imagery product for archiving and retrieval.
Ensure compliance with technical standards, metadata, archiving, privacy and copyright requirements.
• Manage external requests for Defence imagery.
Liaise with clients and relevant internal copyright clearances areas, and issue imagery copyright licences.
Our Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate for this role will have proven experience in digital media / imagery archiving and copyright processes.
An understanding of photographic and video formats (digital and analogue), metadata standards, copyright regulations, privacy principles and digital asset management systems, is expected.
Knowledge of government archiving and records management processes will be particularly useful.
The candidate must demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills, as the role involves significant liaison with both internal areas and external clients.
Skills and Experience: • Demonstrated experience using digital asset management systems to archive still images, video and digital media product, including a sound knowledge of cataloguing.
• Experience with copyright clearance and licensing processes relevant to imagery, and knowledge of government privacy principles.
• Sound understanding of archival and information management policy requirements within a public sector environment, or the ability to quickly acquire an understanding.
• Experience building positive relationships with diverse stakeholders and clients.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
