About Umwelt With three decades of experience and eight locations nationwide, we are a team of vibrant professionals with experience across a range of sectors including renewables, infrastructure, defence, regulation and policy, resources, and the urban development sector. We provide fully integrated environmental and social assessment and management services including concept and feasibility, technical assessment, consultation, approvals, delivery, operation, and decommissioning. Currently our Canberra ACT team are looking to appoint either a Principal Ecologist or a Senior Ecologist. We are looking for a passionate and motivated Principal Ecologist or Senior Ecologist that wants a unique opportunity to grow and develop their career. You will be working within a highly experienced and dynamic national ecology team engaged on a diverse suite of projects across multiple industry sectors. You will be responsible for: Principal Ecologist As a Principal Ecologist, you will spearhead our ecological initiatives, providing leadership and technical expertise to guide projects from inception to completion. With a focus on innovation and excellence, you will lead by example, mentoring staff, and fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional development. Your role will involve cultivating client relationships, identifying new business opportunities, and contributing to the growth and success of our consultancy firm. You will be willing to play a key role in the development and implementation of the growth strategy for the ecology workstream in ACT, as well as travel within the ACT, NSW and nationally as appropriate. Senior Ecologist As a Senior Ecologist, you will play a pivotal role in our team, leading ecological surveys, conducting impact assessments, and providing expert advice to clients. You will leverage your extensive experience in ecological research and project management to drive successful outcomes and ensure compliance with regulatory standards. Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders will be key as you contribute to the development of sustainable solutions and mitigation strategies. Experience in bird and bat utilisation survey and blade strike and barotrauma impact assessment, is desirable. Demonstrated experience in the collection and interpretation of ecological and spatial data. Requirements:
A minimum of 10+ years of experience as a Principal Ecologist and 5+ years as a Senior Ecologist
Degree qualified in ecology, environmental science, zoology, botany or a related discipline
BAM accredited assessor or with extensive experience in BAM and/or other biometric data capture and analysis (or capacity to achieve BAM accreditation)
Proven track record of leading ecological assessments, habitat surveys, and impact analyses
Strong understanding of relevant legislation, regulations, and environmental policies
Strong verbal and written communication skills including experience in preparing and reviewing reports. Willingness to take responsibility for delivery of reports to final quality
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information to diverse audiences, which include clients, government agencies and internal staff
Demonstrate leadership abilities, including project management and team coordination
Current Australian driver’s license
