The Museum is seeking a suitably qualified design professional to develop a framework for a staged exhibition refresh. The Australian National Surfing Museum is located in Torquay and is dedicated to celebrating the history of surfing in Australia. The project will improve visitor experience by providing continuity and depth of experience in the exhibition
The Australian National Surfing Museum was born from the passion and history of surfing. Our purpose is to to collect, preserve, document and share nationally and internationally significant items and stories of Australia’s surfing history and culture.
The museum is dedicated to telling the story of Australian surfing through permanent and temporary exhibitions and education programs embracing inclusivity and accessibility. Stories of the past and stories that are still being written. Communicating the awe, freedom and fun of the surfing culture.
We are also home to the Australian Surfing Hall of Fame which recognises significant Australian surfers and the contributions they have made to industry, sport and culture.
Our collection of approximately 12,000 items is the most significant collection assembled about Australian surfing and allows us to tell these stories of identity, place and belonging. We are home to an unrivaled surfing collection and one of Australia’s best sports collections.
The museum values authenticity in our story telling and interpretation. Inclusivity is essential in representing the diversity of the Australian and international surfing community and creating connections to these stories so people can see themselves in, or identify with, these shared experiences. We value importance of sustainability, both within our organisation and the environment.
The museum operates under the auspices of the Surf Coast Shire Council and is situated in the heart of Torquay’s Surf City precinct. The Museum is seeking a design professional for a short term contract to develop an exhibition framework and implementation plan for the staged refresh of the Museum's permanent exhibitions.
This refresh will be based on the ANSM Masterplan, adapting its elements to align with current circumstances and the existing museum site. While the Masterplan envisioned a new building, this project will focus on enhancing the visitor experience and implementing strategic improvements that align with the budget and scale of a refresh – not museum overhaul.
The intent of this project is to improve the visitor experience and increase visitation levels to the museum, being mindful of the limitations of the existing facility and the need for flexibility of application of design to current and possible future museum buildings.
The full scope of work required including project outputs can be found in the attached project brief.
