Your Opportunity
This role is responsible for facilitating the cultural identity and connection program “Deadly Me” to young people involved, or at risk of involvement, in the youth justice system, mostly Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander young people, and their families. STAR aims to reduce the risk of reoffending and improving community safety. The Cultural Mentor will guide, empower, and support clients in developing connections to family, community, and culture.
This position is open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants only, under Section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977.
The role is currently advertised for 3 working days (Thursday and Friday mandatory) but for the right candidate, we can increase or decrease the hours.
Your key responsibilities will be to:
* Provide advice and support to our youth to enhance cultural awareness
* Conduct, co-ordinate, facilitate and support various group excursions and camps
* Support and encourage reconnection with family and kin
* Build rapport with and address the needs of participants, individually and as a group
* Maintain participant records and provide case notes for sessions
* Complete a range of other administrative duties for the efficient running of the service
* Work collaboratively with community leaders and stakeholders to ensure that our programs and services are culturally appropriate and effective
Requirements for Success:
* Tertiary qualification, either Diploma or degree holder and/or minimum 3 years’ experience in the youth space
* Experience in facilitating group sessions, navigate and respond to changing community needs
* Ability to engage, listen and communicate clearly with people from a variety of different backgrounds and levels of disadvantage including people from the indigenous community.
* Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander societies and their cultures and a general understanding of the issues that affect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in contemporary Australia.
* Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage time effectively.
* A positive team player who looks for ways to improve current work practices and processes.
* Ability to relate to young people with complex trauma and attachment issues
Before starting work with us, you will need to undertake a national police history check, qualifications, and referee checks, and have a clearance to work with children/vulnerable people.
