Context Statement
Wadeye is a large remote Aboriginal community situated approximately 400km south-west of Darwin with a population of around 3000 people on Kardu Diminin land. The vast majority of local Aboriginal people speak Murrinhpatha as a first language. Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Thamarrurr Catholic College (OLSHTCC) is a bilingual school, teaching literacy in both Murrinhpatha and English. The Wadeye Literature Production Centre (LPC) is an integral part of the school. The LPC was founded in 1979 and since then has continued to produce resources to support education in Murrinhpatha and other Aboriginal languages of the surrounding region. The primary purpose of the LPC is to produce and develop educational resources for use in the school’s Murrinhpatha language, culture and RE programs. These resources reflect the lives of our students and help students to know truthfully and hold on to things about their country, kin, dances, songs, totems and dreaming stories, as well as to pursue their faith in a language that they think in and understand.
Applicants must present a passion for bilingual education and a deep respect for Aboriginal People and Culture and willingness to support the Catholic ethos of the College.
A successful applicant will be subject to satisfactory employment screening for child related employment in accordance with the law and will require a NT Working with Children Card. (Ochre Card)
