Job Overview
The Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation is seeking a Fire Operations Specialist-Prevention/Preparedness to implement and coordinate fire prevention, community preparedness, and suppression programs within the Clearwater Unit jurisdictional areas.
This critical mid-level management position oversees wildland fire initial attack personnel and equipment, develops and maintains successful working relationships with other wildland fire suppression organizations and key community partners, and reports to the Clearwater Unit Assistant Fire Management Officer.
Core Responsibilities
* Fire Program Operations: Coordinate and perform fire program operations, planning, training, interagency coordination, preparedness, and prevention services within the Clearwater Unit jurisdictional areas.
* Fire Pre-Suppression: Develop and implement pre-suppression strategies to protect lives, property, and natural resources on state and private lands.
* Community Fire Preparedness & Prevention: Collaborate with local communities to promote fire safety awareness and develop prevention strategies.
* Fire Suppression: Oversee the implementation of fire suppression efforts, including prescribed burning and wildfire response.
* Staff Management: Supervise 2.65 seasonal fire FTEs and provide guidance on incident command system (ICS) training and related fire program experience.
* Facility and Equipment Maintenance: Ensure that facilities and equipment are properly maintained and ready for use.
* Trust Land Management Support: Provide support for various Trust Land activities as directed by the Unit Manager, Unit FMO, and Unit AFMO.
Requirements
* High school diploma or equivalent required.
* Minimum of five years of progressive experience in fireline leadership, ICS training, and related fire program experience.
* Ability to attain Incident Commander Type 4 and Strike Team/Task Force Leader certification upon hire.
* Effective communication skills, both orally and written.
* Knowledge of principles and practices of Wildland Firefighting; emergency management; natural resources; adult education and training; and fire management including suppression, protection, and prevention.
