About the opportunity
The University of Sydney is setting up a brand-new MRI facility, with a Siemens Cima.X 3T MRI scanner. The facility is located adjacent to its research dedicated state-of-the-art Hybrid Theatre (at the Charles Perkins Centre) and will be used to support both clinical human research as well as for interventional large animal research studies, making it a unique facility in Australia.
As the Lead Radiographer Scientist and MRI Facility Manager, you will be responsible for the overall management, operation, and functioning of Sydney Imaging's Clinical Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) capability. This will include the provision of training, support and technical expertise to support research teams, oversee day-to-day operations of the facility, operate MRI equipment, develop and optimise imaging protocols, facilitate data acquisition, and ensure the facility complies with safety and regulatory standards.
You will also support multidisciplinary MRI research collaborations within Sydney Imaging, and engagement with the National Imaging Facility network.
Your key responsibilities will be to:
- design and implement the strategic plan, objectives, and operational strategies for the Clinical MRI facility, including evaluating new technologies, recommending access policies, and maintaining cutting-edge research capabilities
- provide leadership in managing resources, engaging stakeholders, developing SOPs, and coordinating teams to ensure optimal use of the facility
- support advanced MRI research through advice on experiment design, data analysis, and innovative imaging protocols
- drive multi-site initiatives, foster partnerships, and contribute to grants and research publications
- prepare business plans and reports, engage with NIF members and industry partners, lead community initiatives, and represent the facility at national and international forums to promote imaging research and foster collaborations
- manage day-to-day operations, ensuring efficient equipment use, compliance with regulations, and alignment with research goals
- ensure the maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting of MRI equipment, coordinates with vendors, and tracks performance to maintain operational standards.
About you
- registration with Medical Radiation Practice Board of Australia (AHPRA)
- postgraduate qualifications and demonstrated work experience in Magnetic Resonance Imaging / Neuroimaging or a related field
- extensive experience in operating MRI equipment scanning human subjects within a research setting, including the development, optimisation, and validation of advanced imaging protocols
- extensive experience in managing the day-to-day operations of an MRI facility, including equipment maintenance, workflow optimisation, and integration of novel technologies
- demonstrated expertise in operating, troubleshooting, and maintaining MRI equipment, including the development, optimisation, and validation of imaging protocols for clinical and research studies
- expert knowledge of MRI safety standards and regulatory compliance, with demonstrated experience in establishing and maintaining Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- proficient in data analysis and technical reporting, assisting researchers in the interpretation and presentation of MRI results, and demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues and develop innovative solutions
- proven leadership in managing multi-site collaborations, driving business development, and forging strategic partnerships with academic, clinical, and industry stakeholders to advance institutional and research objectives is highly desirable
- track record of producing high-impact research outputs, including peer-reviewed publications and invited presentations is highly desirable.
