Community Education Counsellor (Identified) - Hervey Bay State High School, EducationDepartment of Education QLD – North Coast QLDHervey Bay State High School is looking to employ a Community Educational Counsellor (Identified) to support the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and their families.About the RoleThe Community Educational Counsellor (CEC) primary role is to provide support in a variety of ways:Pastoral care (assist in building positive relationships)Improve student's wellbeing by providing a link between home and the schoolFacilitating the growth of a positive cultural identity by organising and conducting cultural programs and assisting teachersIntegrating a positive cultural identity into a wider multicultural societyAssist with extra-curricular and co-curricular activities for students, parents and familiesWorking with parents, students and teachers to resolve issues/concernsAssist students in the transition from school to school; from school to work and from school to further educationCapacity buildingThe overall aim is to assist all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to improve their academic outcomes and become more informed and active citizens.How you will be assessedThe ideal applicant will be someone who has the following key capabilities:Supports strategic direction - Capability and understanding in applying Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander ways of knowing, being and doing in a variety of ways to support young people, community and school staff.Achieve results - Ability to provide appropriate educational counselling and other support services to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander young people and staff.Supports productive working relationships - Ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples.Displays personal drive and integrity - Understanding and capability in the development, facilitation and presentation of targeted training programs and youth engagement initiatives. Provide examples of cultural, academic and wellbeing programs.Communicates with influence - Demonstrated sound personal qualities of tact, reliability and an ability to work with others both individually and as a member of a team.Mandatory Requirements for an Identified Role:It is a genuine occupational requirement for Identified roles that the position be filled by an Aboriginal person or a Torres Strait Islander person as set out in Section 7 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 for the purposes contained in Section 25 of that Act.Verification of Aboriginality and/or Torres Strait Island heritageFor administrative purposes, in relation to an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander identified role, an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person is a person who identifies as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person and is either:Accepted as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person by the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community in which he or she lives.By definition, a person who is not an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cannot be employed (on any basis) to perform the duties of an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander identified role.Applicants to this position may have to provide confirmation of their Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage.
