We would like to humbly acknowledge the Wulgurukaba, Bindal, and Juru peoples on whose land our school is located, or staff and young people live on and travel across daily.
ABOUT THE ORGANISATION:
Townsville Flexible School with campuses at Bowen and Burdekin is a Catholic School in the Edmund Rice tradition. There are 22 Flexible School (FS) throughout Australia who offer a full-time and multiyear secondary education program for young people who have disengaged from mainstream schooling. Enrolled young people may express a broad range of complex education and social needs and FS respond with a variety of flexible and innovative teaching and learning practices including vocational planning and the development of social connectedness.
The purpose of a Flexible School is to provide young people with a varied and holistic set of learning experiences supporting them to identify and pursue an individual transition to adulthood, employment, further education and training and social connectedness.
The Townsville FS was established in 2006 to meet the needs of the local community. In 2019 the Burdekin and Bowen Educational Engagement Programs were established after many years of local consultation. These new programs are campuses of the Townsville FS and run programs for grades 7-10. We are expected to grow from one class group to several in the next few years.
ABOUT THE PROGRAM AND ROLE:
The young people who attend our programs have typically experienced significant detachment from education and social inclusion and may be involved with the Department of Youth Justice and/or Children Safety.
The workers of the each campus are employed through the Townsville FS and based in the local community. There are strong working relationships between the campuses and travel between them may be required. The daily program with young people will include on site and off site activities. Each program will work intensively with a small group of young people to prepare them to access further training, educational and vocational opportunities. This role is based at the Bowen FS Campus.
