Job Posting Title: Department Head, Model Req ID: 10107873 Job Description: The Department Head is responsible for long-term technical and creative development of the department. They work with Show Production and Supervision to steer the local bidding, creative and technical approach across all shows within their discipline, ensuring approaches are effective and consistent. Partnering with the Talent Manager, they are responsible for the day-to-day support and mentorship of the Supervisors / Leads / Artists working in their department. Primary Responsibilities: Department Management The Department Head is responsible for developing and supporting a department structure that is conducive to maintaining a healthy seniority ratio, in line with department targets. Support the Talent Manager to cast and assign appropriate teams to the various projects, balancing the financial, technical and creative considerations of the work and supporting crew as needed Support the Talent Manager to assess the skill set and performance of the team. Reviewing appraisals and relaying feedback as necessary. Collaborate with the Talent Manager to conduct regular 1:1s with department leadership (Department Supervisors, Leads, Key Artists). Work with Talent Managers and Talent Acquisition to identify potential new candidates, attend interviews and provide assessments. Represent ILM at recruitment events; and support talent engagement with local schools. Collaborate with Talent Manager and other stakeholders on utilization planning for artists on Overhead. Department Training and Development The Department Head ensures that their team is trained to effectively meet the needs of their roles and in line with the global needs of the business. Works with the Talent Manager and Studio Training Group to support the training and integration of new artists into the existing team. Assigning support and mentorship as needed. Works with Department Head counterparts, Artist Discipline Supervisors and Leads to ensure canonical training documentation is up to date. Identify and plan strategic training initiatives to align with industry development and support the continual growth of their team. Support and integrate junior and graduate talent into the department through development initiatives such as the Jedi Academy. Encourage and plan showcases of Sydney FX work in global forums, with the aim of knowledge sharing and development. Department Production Support Ensure that work is delivered to ILM’s global standards, on time and on budget Work with Artist Discipline Supervisors and show production to bid and plan work as needed, ensuring methodologies, quality and schedule expectations are consistent and achievable. Assist Artist Discipline Supervisors and Leads to solve issues as they arise during production, delegating work where necessary. Act as Artist Discipline Supervisor for shows when coverage or expertise is needed. Department Creative and Technical Strategy Working closely with the global Department Head and Head of CG to create a compelling strategy and vision for the Creative and Technical future of the department, keeping up to date with industry developments and tools. Propose and oversee the development of new tools, workflows or techniques as required for successful and efficient delivery of shows. Work closely with Department Heads in other locations, the global Department Head, and the Head of CG, to align and share developments, resources, and department information to promote global collaboration. Collaborate with Department Heads in other areas of the VFX pipeline to design workflow improvements and efficient handoffs between teams. Work with other Department Heads and technology stakeholders to provide direction on software license forecasting and purchasing and hardware needs. Education/Experience 5 years of proven leadership and management experience in VFX 10 years VFX experience in relevant disciplines. Experience working for a global company and working with teams in many time zones Required Skills/Competencies Expert level understanding of the visual effects process Expert level understanding of the techniques, tools and software used in their discipline.
