NAAFLS is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation (ACCO ) and independent Family Violence Prevention Legal Service (FVPLS ).
We have offices in Darwin (Larrakia land), Katherine (Jawoyn, Dagoman and Wardaman land) and Nhulunbuy (Yol?u land), and service over 40 remote communities within the Top End region spanning from the Tiwi Islands down to Lajamanu, Wadeye across to Borroloola.
Regular travel to these communities is predominantly in line with the Darwin and Katherine Court Circuit calendars and requires our teams to stay overnight on community for up to two trips of 2-4 days per month.
We provide culturally sensitive legal advice, assistance, representation, and support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Top End communities who have experienced domestic, family, and sexual violence.

ROLE OVERVIEW
NAAFLS is seeking a creative and proactive Communications Officer who can be on the front foot of ensuring NAAFLS work is present, visible and representative to the community we serve.
The successful candidate will be a strategic and creative communicator with exceptional written and verbal skills, able to craft audience-specific content and distil complex information into clear messages.
They will be highly collaborative yet capable of working independently, adept at managing stakeholder relationships, social media platforms, and multiple priorities, while demonstrating strong attention to detail and a proactive approach to engagement and communications initiatives.
The Communications Officer will be responsible for developing and implementing a communications and engagement strategy that promotes NAAFLS' goals, policy and objectives, and represent the stories of our strong and resilient communities.
This includes identifying target audiences and strategies to effectively engage them and developing trusted, reciprocal relationships with media outlets.
Reporting directly to the Executive Policy Officer, the Communications Officer will support NAAFLS CEO, Board and other Executive staff by preparing media releases, key messages, speaking notes and will work with the policy, advocacy and Community Legal Education team to deliver social media campaigns and messaging.
DUTIES
Develop and implement NAAFLS Communication and Engagement Strategy that supports the organisation's engagement with key stakeholders in government and the community services sector.
Proactively undertake media monitoring and scanning of relevant news sources and information updates and create responses or recommendations.
Build relationships with media stakeholders, journalists, influencers and key audiences relevant to the NAAFLS goals and the community.
Develop and manage communications content in a variety of written, visual, video and online content, including NAAFLS website, written media releases and social media posts, PowerPoint presentations, and in partnership or on behalf of Central Australian Aboriginal Family Legal Unit where required.
Prepare NAAFLS CEO, Board of Directors and relevant Executive leadership for all public facing engagements, such as media interviews, talking points, podcasts, keynote speeches, presentations and panel discussions.
Ensure all content, style and branding in NAAFLS' communications reflect the organisations values and positive stories of the organisation and community we serve.
Adhere to NAAFLS policies and procedures.
Build a positive culture within the service which is aligned with NAAFLS' values and Strategic Plan.
Participate in all staff and team meetings as required.
Participate in professional development including self-directed learning and required training in consultation with the Executive Policy Officer.
Undertake other duties as required.
SELECTION CRITERIA
Experience and/or understanding and commitment to representing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices and perspectives in a respectful and strength-based approach that adheres to self-determination principles.
Strong written and verbal communication skills including attention to detail and demonstrated expertise in developing content for a range of audiences and across different platforms.
Demonstrated experience in producing and managing a range of communication tools, including publications, websites, e-newsletters, social media strategies and other digital technologies.
Demonstrated expertise in media relations including relationship development, proactive engagement collaborating with key stakeholders and targeting stories to appropriate audiences.
Excellent critical thinking skills and the ability to exercise good judgment and solve problems quickly and effectively, including in handling media inquiries and providing strategic advice to leadership.
Ability to take on a variety of diverse tasks, adjust to shifting priorities and respond quickly when situations change.
Strong organisational, time management and planning skills; with an ability to work autonomously, within a team and as directed.
Must obtain a Working with Children Clearance and a clear Criminal History Check.
Identifies as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person.
Experience working in the non-profit sector, particularly in an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation or domestic and family violence service provider.
Relevant tertiary qualifications in Marketing, PR, Communications, Journalism, or related field.
