Overview:
The Personal Care Assistant (PCA) provides support and assistance to individuals who need help with daily living activities due to age, illness, disability, or other reasons. The PCA's role is to offer compassionate and reliable care, ensuring the client's physical, emotional, and social needs are met while maintaining their dignity and independence.

1. Enhancing Quality of Life: The primary purpose is to enhance the quality of life for individuals by assisting them in their daily activities and promoting their independence and dignity.
2. Personalised Care: PCA provides personalised care tailored to the unique needs and preferences of each individual client. This includes assistance with personal hygiene, grooming, dressing, mobility, and other activities of daily living.
3. Promoting Independence: PCA's empower individuals to be as independent as possible by aiding and encouraging while respecting their autonomy and choices.
4. Ensuring Safety and Well-being: Another critical purpose is to ensure the safety and well-being of consumers by creating a safe environment, following infection control procedures, administering medications safely, and responding to emergencies promptly and effectively.
5. Emotional and Social Support: PCA's offer emotional support and companionship to consumers; they also facilitate social interactions and engagement in recreational activities to combat isolation and promote mental well-being.
6. Documentation and Communication: PCA's maintain accurate records of consumers' care activities, communicate effectively with supervisors and colleagues, and report any changes in consumers' conditions to ensure continuity of care and appropriate interventions.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Personal Care Assistance:
Assist consumers with personal hygiene tasks, including bathing, grooming, and toileting, dressing and undressing, ensuring their comfort and dignity. Assist with mobility, transfer, and positioning as needed.
2. Medication Management:
Administer medications according to prescribed schedules and dosage instructions. Monitor and document clients' medication intake and any observed side effects. Communicate with healthcare professionals regarding medication changes or concerns.
3. Daily Living Support:
Assist consumers with meal preparation, feeding, and dietary needs. Provide support with household tasks such as light cleaning, laundry, and organizing. Accompany consumers to appointments, outings, and social activities as requested.
4. Emotional and Social Support:
Build rapport and trust with clients, fostering positive relationships based on respect and empathy. Provide emotional support and companionship, actively listening to consumers' concerns and providing reassurance.
5. Documentation and Reporting:
Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of consumers' care activities, including daily progress notes and incident reports. Communicate effectively with managers and colleagues regarding consumers' needs and any changes in their condition. Adhere to confidentiality policies and regulations when handling sensitive information.
6. Safety and Well-being:
Ensure a safe and hazard-free environment for consumers, identifying and addressing potential risks. Follow infection control protocols and guidelines to prevent the spread of illness or infection. Respond promptly to emergencies or crisis situations, following established procedures and protocols.
Qualifications and Skills:
Essential:
Enrolled in a minimum Certificate III in aged care or equivalent or have obtained a certificate already. Previous experience working with individuals or in a similar caregiving role is desirable. Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team, demonstrating reliability and flexibility in a dynamic caregiving environment. Basic understanding of medical and personal care procedures. Infection control practices and safety procedures. A willingness to undergo background checks and meet any other requirements mandated by regulatory bodies or employers. NDIS Workers Screening Check.
