About the Opportunity Ballina Shire Council is seeking a Town Planner/Development Assessment Officer with experience between 2 to 3 years, ideally within a local government setting. This position is suited to someone early in their career, looking to deepen their experience and take on more responsibility in a supportive and experienced team environment. With guidance from senior planners, this role offers the chance to work across a diverse range of development applications —from residential and commercial to rural and coastal projects—providing valuable hands-on experience in regulatory planning and community engagement. Reporting to the Coordinator of Development Assessment, you will assess and process applications, provide regulatory advice, and deliver exceptional customer service. Key Responsibilities: Assessing a wide range of development applications in line with statutory and policy requirements Providing professional guidance to applicants and the public on planning and regulatory matters Managing inquiries related to application submissions and regulatory processes Conducting inspections to ensure compliance with approved development conditions Preparing and presenting reports and written correspondence for both internal and public audiences Collaborating with senior planners and contributing to ongoing policy development Maintaining accurate records and adhering to the Council's standards for safety and environmental management Representing the Council at community meetings and effectively communicating complex information About You You will have a Bachelor's degree or diploma in Town Planning, Urban Planning, Environmental Design, Arts or a related field from a recognised institution. A minimum of 2-3 years of experience in development assessment or statutory planning is essential, with a preference for candidates with local government experience. You must hold a valid driver's license, and Council vehicles will be available for work-related travel. Skills and Attributes: Strong ability to communicate effectively both in writing and in person Resilient, professional, and capable of managing a high workload Experience in handling inquiries and providing quality customer service A strong understanding and experience with NSW Planning regulations is vital Demonstrated ability to operate independently and as part of a collaborative team Coastal, rural, and commercial planning experience is beneficial but not mandatory Soft Skills: The ideal candidate is a confident communicator who can navigate complex regulatory processes, handle public inquiries, and contribute positively to the team environment. Our benefits package includes: An option of a compressed four-day work week (19-day month flexible work arrangement for full time staff. Council is currently trialling a range of flexible working options. Subject to operational requirements, full time office staff will have access to a nine-day fortnight, with a thirty-minute lunch break.
