An Independent Third Person (ITP) plays a vital role in ensuring individuals with cognitive disabilities or mental illnesses receive fair treatment during interactions with the police.
Trained by and registered with the Office of the Public Advocate, ITP volunteers are equipped to assist people with cognitive disabilities or mental illnesses during interviews or when making formal statements to Victoria Police.
This support is crucial for alleged offenders, victims, or witnesses who may require additional assistance due to their disability or illness.
Key Responsibilities:
* Facilitate effective communication between the individual and the police
* Ensure the person understands their rights and entitlements
* Provide ongoing support throughout the process
As an independent entity, ITP volunteers maintain a neutral stance, separate from the investigation and police procedures.
Essential Requirements:
* Excellent communication skills are essential for success in this role
* A reliable vehicle is necessary for transporting individuals to appointments and training sessions
* A minimum 2-year commitment is required, making this position less suitable for students seeking short-term experience
* Volunteers must complete a comprehensive 2-day induction program
* Regular practice and assessment exercises, including participation in mock interviews, are mandatory
