What's the role? The General Manager Engineering will oversee the Engineering functions across a number of direct and matrix teams, driving innovation and efficiency while ensuring the engineering artifacts developed as part of the project and operational delivery are aligned with published and agreed standards and guidelines. They will be responsible for developing and implementing engineering principles, standards, and guidelines, and fostering a culture of collaboration and technical excellence - both within the local developer community and also contributing to the broader organisational community of practice. The General Manager Engineering will also be accountable for defining clear objectives and key results for the department, teams, and individuals, and will use key metrics to evaluate performance and success. This role requires a strong technical background, exceptional leadership and communication skills, and a proven ability to drive results in a fast-paced and dynamic environment. Responsibilities - Develop and implement Engineering standards including, but not limited to; code reusability & readability, testing, consistency, modularity, versioning, scalability, error handling, performance, security, branch & merge management, configuration management, and cloud consumption impact. - Build on strategies to drive innovation and increase engineering efficiency. - Oversee and guide Engineering / Development functions across multiple (direct and indirect) teams to ensure alignment with standards and guidelines for project and operational delivery. - Provide input into evaluating the performance and success measures for the development teams, and individuals by defining key metrics. - Lead Digital governance groups bringing together Architecture, Platform Managers, and Engineering teams to align on ways in which to solve complex technical challenges whilst limiting Technical Debt. - Participate in, and in some cases lead, communities of practice to align teams and/or introduce innovation. - Identify and in consultation with Architecture and Platform Managers develop strategies to address legacy elements of the stack and/or define future state. - Assist in attracting, retaining, and developing top engineering talent across FTE, Contracts, and Partners. - Building and mentoring high-performing teams (including delivery Partners) in fostering a culture of collaboration and technical excellence. Who are you? - Strategy - a proven track record in developing and leading strategy (development and implementations), including the ability to easily distil and articulate complex issues and remediation proposals and bring all cohorts and stakeholders along the journey in a positive manner. - Leadership - at ease leading, mentoring, and guiding a wide and varied team across traditional line management, matrix management, and with service providers (embedded, off-site, and offshore) - Positive, pragmatic, and resilient - this role operates in an ever changing environment.
