About Us
Flourish Australia's purpose is to create and inspire a world where everyone's mental wellbeing thrives. We help people with a personal lived experience of a mental health issue to feel supported and to meet their everyday challenges. We do this by valuing lived experience, supporting recovery, challenging discrimination, and connecting people, families and communities.
With 60+ locations across New South Wales and Southern Queensland, we have over 50 years’ experience providing comprehensive, holistic support for people affected by mental health issues. We provide one-on-one mentoring to assist people set goals, and guide them through the steps to achieve them. Most importantly, we put people in control of their personal recovery journey.
A day in the life of Mental Health and Peer Work in Flourish Australia's community outreach programs
As a Mental Health Worker or Peer Worker in one of our community outreach programs your typical day is both varied and interesting. You work with a high degree of independence, but with the support and guidance of your supervisor and colleagues when needed.
The shift typically starts by checking your daily tasks on our computer database. You would then attend a morning meeting with the rest of your team. At this meeting the priorities and issues of the day would be discussed before you head out to visit the people to whom we provide support.
The nature of the support provided to people you visit varies depending on the individual needs of each person. Typical tasks involve helping people look after their home environment and supporting people with community activities like shopping, attending medical appointments or going to the gym. You might also support people to participate in recreational activities, look for work or gain a qualification. The emphasis in mental health work is always on supporting independence and skill development.
As a Mental Health Worker or Peer Worker you work within a recovery framework where the person receiving support is central in determining the assistance they receive. By walking alongside them as they determine their goals, you support people to make choices based on their own personal desires and wish to change and learn. On a daily basis you would also work in partnership with family members and carers, clinical mental health services and other support agencies. This might involve organising support meetings, liaising with people over the phone and corresponding via email.
Our positions
The difference between a Mental Health Worker and a Peer Worker at Flourish Australia is that a Peer Worker is required to use their lived experience of a mental health issue and personal recovery openly, appropriately and effectively to build professional relationships with the people they support that also experience a mental health issue.
It is not a requirement for Mental Health Workers to use their lived experience of a mental health issue in their everyday work.
For more information about what it means to be a Peer Worker with Flourish Australia, please review the Position Description and the Peer Worker information statement “What You Should Consider Before Becoming A Peer Worker”.
