Through the delivery of culturally appropriate programs such as the Murri Court, we aim to reduce incarceration rates, enhance cultural understanding within the justice system, and empower communities.About the Murri CourtThe Murri Court provides a culturally safe and respectful process for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander defendants in Queensland’s Magistrates Courts. Supported by Elders and Respected Persons from the community, it integrates cultural perspectives and links defendants with programs to address offending behaviors and support rehabilitation.About the RoleThe Murri Court Coordinator plays a pivotal role in supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander defendants, facilitating connections with cultural and rehabilitative resources, and ensuring smooth court processes. This position is funded by the Department of Justice (DOJ) and governed by Five Bridges Pty Ltd.Key ResponsibilitiesPrepare and present written and oral submissions (e.g., sentencing, bail) to the courts.Attend court sittings, providing assistance to defendants and linking victims with support services.Build relationships with court stakeholders, statutory workers, and community agencies.Coordinate meetings and activities with the Ipswich Community Justice Group.Organize and implement programs in consultation with Five Bridges and the CJG.Maintain accurate records and reports in alignment with departmental requirements.Facilitate Men’s and Women’s Yarning Circles and quarterly stakeholder meetings.Provide guidance and support to project and case workers within the team.Promote culturally appropriate practices and uphold the values of the Murri Court program.Selection CriteriaDemonstrated ability to effectively communicate with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, both written and verbal.Knowledge of court processes, legislation, and the criminal justice system in Queensland, or the ability to quickly acquire this knowledge.Proven experience in program management, coordination, and stakeholder engagement.Strong organizational skills, including managing deadlines and reporting accurately.Competence in using computer systems to manage tasks and develop reports.Understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural values and offender behavior.RequirementsMust identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person.Positive Notice Blue Card and ability to obtain a Criminal History Check.Willingness to travel to court locations and community events as required.Why Join Us?Be part of a team dedicated to empowering communities and reducing justice system disparities.Work in a supportive and culturally respectful environment.Enjoy opportunities for professional growth and development.Note: This position is an identified role under section 25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 (Qld) and is only open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants.
