Overview As Legal Officer you will be the go-to resource for legal advice, engaging external solicitors when necessary, especially in complex litigation cases.About the Role We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Legal Officer to join a dynamic team.
This position will primarily focus on providing expert legal services in compliance matters and commercial contract transactions, with a secondary emphasis on contract management and dispute resolution.
The Legal Counsel will work closely with our Procurement and Governance divisions, while also supporting all business units within the Council, ensuring they comply with legal requirements.Key Responsibilities Facilitate efficient decision-making by ensuring staff are informed of their legal obligations and potential risks.
Identify legal issues and gaps in knowledge, providing accurate and timely instructions to external solicitors when needed.
Apply a deep understanding of Council's commercial objectives, services, stakeholder relationships, and political context.
Offer pragmatic legal advice to support the pursuit of Council's commercial interests and regulatory functions.
Deliver legal training sessions for staff across all levels to provide practical guidance.
Maintain a register of legal precedents and templates for consistency across legal documents.
Essential Requirements Minimum of 2 years' experience in a transactional or legal compliance role.
Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines without compromising accuracy and sound judgment.
Excellent professional judgment, with the ability to identify when external solicitors or barristers should be engaged.
Exceptional attention to detail with the ability to interpret legal documents in context.
Strong negotiation skills, with a focus on managing legal and commercial risks aligned with Council's priorities.
Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders and explain complex legal matters in simple terms.
Desirable Attributes Experience supporting compliance with local government tendering or procurement legislation.
Knowledge of or interest in local government operations.
Enthusiastic to collaborate across various disciplines and contribute to discussions with an open mind.
Experience drafting contracts and advising on compliance in waste management, construction, and ICT sectors.
Experience in commercial and property transactions, planning law, environmental protection law, intellectual property law, privacy law, and access to information laws.
