Description: The following tasks are completed by nursing assistance on
a daily basis. The following are duties expected but not limited to:
‐ Room attendance/ make up/ cleaning
‐ Personal care of patients
‐ Preparation & management of medical services under supervision
‐ Administration
‐ Transfers/transportation/manual handling
‐ Recreation and Leisure
Assistant in Nursing work under the direction of a Registered Nurse or
Enrolled Nurse.

Shift Times:
Shift times vary between 8 to 12 hour shifts depended on hospital
departments or facility care environment

Physical Environment: Even indoor flooring.
Minimal noise levels. Satisfactory ventilation,
artificial and natural lighting. Some stairs may
feature in work area.

Client Base: Mixed for age, gender, concomitant illness

Client needs / demands vary according to the individual
medical and psychological needs.
Education: Most AIN positions require either:
‐ TAFE qualifications as an Assistant in Nursing
Certificate III Acute Care
‐ Certificate III in Aged Care, or
‐ Proof of current studies towards EN/RN qualifications
Key Requirements :
A Minimum of 6 months experience as an assistant Nurse.
A current, satisfactory police certificate or NDIS Paid Yellow Card

first aid & CPR Certificate
Manual Handling certificate
HCA or Ausmed Training completed or willing to complete

Position Description
POSITION TITLE: Assistant in Nursing/ Personal Care Attendant
LOCATION: Working within a Registered Aged Care Facility or Hospital.
REPORTING TO: Agency Human Resources Team
BASIS OF EMPLOYMENT: Casual,
HOURS OF WORK: As agreed with The Agency.
Example of shift hours:
Morning Shift (6am – 2pm)
Afternoon Shift (2pm – 10pm)
Night shift (10pm – 7am)
Different facilities will have their own shift start & finish times.
ROLE PURPOSE:
The Personal Care Attendant (PCA) / Assistant in Nursing (AIN) is responsible for the delivery of care
and services to residents in all areas of activities of daily living in accordance with the
residents/clients identified needs and preferences. The PCA/AIN provides support which considers
the residents/clients physical, spiritual, social and cultural needs and which enables residents/clients
to maintain their own well being and independence for as long as possible.
Key Responsibility Areas Performance Measures
Maintain the residents/clients activities of daily
living in the following
areas:
Personal hygiene, grooming, manicuring and
oral hygiene.
Continence management.
Communicates with all residents effectively
including the maintenance and the fitting of
hearing aids and glasses as required.
Assisting those residents’/clients with
challenging behaviors, by participation in
the development and implementation of an
individually designed management plan.
The residents’/clients mobility, by assisting
with walking, use of wheelchairs and other
aids and transfers.
Supports and assists residents with food and
fluids as required.
Maximises the residents’/clients physical
function by assisting with rehabilitative
treatment such as physiotherapy exercises.
Assists the nursing staff with treatments as

Documentation
Reporting in progress notes and providing
relevant information to assist the RN to carry
out holistic assessment and care planning.
Complete tick sheets, record resident BO, fill
out continence assessment flow charts,
record behavior activity and resident
participation in activity programs.
Complete incident reports that they are
witness to, diet sheets, attendance records.
Review resident care plans with sign off by a
Registered Nurse.
Contribute to ACFI documentation as per
scope of practice.
Demonstrated understanding of compulsory
reporting requirements.
Active Recreation Participation:
Assists individual resident's to attend
recreational preferences.
Accurate documentation.
Demonstrate caring attitude and always
treat residents with dignity and respect.
Maintain their Domestic arrangements:
Assist with bed making and tidying work
areas in a manner agreed to by the resident
and as directed.
Perform other tasks as directed.
Maintenance of clean and sanitary living
quarters.
Maintenance of confidentiality and resident
