Volunteer Opportunity: Gallery Assistant
Outsider Gallery is seeking a committed and detail-oriented Gallery Assistant to support our operations and gain direct experience in the commercial art world. This position offers a unique opportunity to engage with contemporary art, contribute to exhibition programming, and develop professional networks within Sydney’s art scene.
About Outsider Gallery
Outsider Gallery is a commercial art gallery dedicated to presenting innovative and conceptually rigorous work by emerging and established artists. Situated in Surry Hills, the gallery serves as a platform for critical dialogue and engagement with contemporary artistic practices.
Responsibilities
* Provide front-of-house support, welcoming visitors and assisting with enquiries.
* Conduct research on contemporary artists, exhibitions, and critical discourse, contributing written analyses where relevant.
* Assist with day-to-day gallery operations, including administrative tasks and exhibition logistics.
* Attend and support monthly exhibition openings and other gallery events.
* Participate in artist studio visits, offering insight into contemporary practices and strengthening connections between the gallery and artists.
* Support digital content creation and social media management as needed.
* Gain first-hand experience working in a contemporary art gallery.
* Develop critical writing, research, and administrative skills within a professional setting.
* Build professional relationships with artists, curators, and collectors.
* Opportunity to earn commission on sales.
* Potential to transition into a paid role based on performance and alignment with the gallery’s needs.
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will demonstrate:
* Relevant tertiary qualifications in Art History, Business, or a related field .
* Previous gallery experience (preferred).
* Proficiency in Adobe Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Lightroom) and Microsoft Excel .
* Strong social media skills, with experience in content creation (videography and photography highly desirable).
* Confidence in client engagement, with strong interpersonal and communication skills.
* A polished, professional presentation and ability to represent the gallery effectively.
* A proactive, self-motivated approach and ability to work independently.
* Retail or hospitality experience (desirable).
* Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) certification (desirable).
* Preference will be given to candidates based locally.
Location & Time Commitment
Location: 144 Commonwealth St, Surry Hills (5-minute walk from Central Station)
Commitment: 1–2 days per week, 10 AM–6 PM, with flexibility as required.
