The Opportunity
This is a fantastic opportunity to join the Strategy, Policy, and Legislation team within the department. The successful candidate will support the delivery of legislative functions, advising on and responding to queries related to legislative and policy matters. With a confirmed contract till the end of the financial year 2025 and a high likelihood of a 12-month extension, this role offers a stable and impactful career opportunity within the federal government. You will be directly contributing to the creation and implementation of policies that promote energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.
The team conducts regular stand-ups multiple times a week, holds fun activities like quizzes, and discusses team values every couple of months to foster a supportive and positive work environment.
The Role

* Provide legislative support for the national appliance and equipment energy efficiency legislation
* Work closely with the legal team to assess, advise on, and mitigate risks associated with delegation
* Develop drafting instructions for legislative determinations and provide guidance on minor edits
* Develop and refine drafting instructions for legislative amendments, supporting their progression through the legislative process
* Prepare briefs for decisions on exemption requests from legislative requirements
* Assist in the drafting and finalisation of various legislative instruments, ensuring accuracy and compliance with regulatory standards
* Engage in cross-jurisdictional stakeholder management, negotiating outcomes to improve the intergovernmental agreement (IGA)
The Ideal Person
The ideal candidate will have:
* Demonstrable experience as a practising lawyer and/or in legislation development. Previous experience in a government setting and regulatory experience will be highly regarded, though other relevant skills and experience will also be considered
* Ability to read and understand legislation, with a passion for learning about legislative frameworks. While energy experience is not crucial, a background in regulation and a strong understanding of Commonwealth processes will be beneficial
* A proven track record of working effectively in a team environment, demonstrating problem-solving abilities and a proactive approach to tasks
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information clearly and concisely to diverse stakeholders
* A strong sense of initiative to contribute to a positive team culture

To be eligible for this role, you must be an Australian citizen. You must also have a Baseline security clearance.
Salary / Rate
* Hourly Rate: $60/hr -$75/hr + 11.5% Super
* Contract Duration: Till the end of the financial year 2025, with a high likelihood of a 12-month extension
* Location: This role can accommodate candidates from any capital city
* WFH: Typically, team members go into the office three days a week and work from home two days, but more flexible arrangements can be negotiated
