The Role
Your role as an APS 6 Asset Accounting and Reporting Officer within the Financial Accounting and Assets team is accountable for the following:
* Providing qualitative and quantitative data analysis with a focus on the presentation of data to feed into strategic management reporting.
* Understanding and implementing practical governance requirements, risk oversight and facilitating compliance with the financial management framework.
* Contributing to the management of Fixed Assets Register and Inventory Holdings including maintenance of asset classes and effective lives, additions and disposals.
* Contributing proactively to the completion of Defence’s external financial reporting functions including journal preparation and reconciliations, balance sheet management with investigation into reconciling items and financial statement analysis.
* Liaising with a broad range of stakeholders including auditors, business areas, procurement and systems specialists, contractors and members of the military.
* Providing sound practical advice and guidance to stakeholders on technical financial accounting and asset lifecycle assurance activities. Understanding, applying and aligning Defence’s mission and business objectives to financial reporting and asset management.
* Providing clear and consistent communication, managing expectations and setting clear performance and behavioural standards.
* Providing leadership, advice, guidance and support to more junior roles in the team and across the wider directorate.

The Asset Accounting team is responsible for the full financial reporting and the financial accounting of Defence’s assets through their capability lifecycle. They are also accountable for policy advice, compliance assurance, conducting quality assurance checks on financial accounting activities and liaison with external auditors. The team’s practical judgement is relied upon to deliver professional advice and reporting around complex assets, business processes, procurements and multi-year billion-dollar projects.
The teams are responsible for the financial accounting of the largest asset base in the Commonwealth valued in the hundreds of billions of dollars. Think big, physical tangible assets like aircraft, ships, submarines plus a huge property portfolio, specialist military equipment, complex intellectual property and bespoke technology.
