The Program's Importance
Social connections are vital for overall health, especially as people age. The Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme (ACVVS) and Volunteer Visitors program support older Australians who live in aged care facilities or their own homes and experience loneliness or social isolation.
About the Role
As a visiting volunteer, you will make regular social visits to an older person in your community at an agreed day and time. Together, you might share conversation and reminisce over tea, or participate in shared interests like playing cards or board games.
Requirements
You will need good conversational skills and the ability to relate to and empathise with a broad range of older people, including those with different lived experiences, abilities, and cultures. All volunteers must complete a National Criminal Check. Red Cross provides training, ongoing support, and access to other opportunities within its global network.
The Impact of Your Work
As a visiting volunteer, you will brighten the life of an older person experiencing loneliness by offering friendship and social connectedness. You will have the opportunity to learn from their unique history and knowledge, and they will have the opportunity to learn from yours. You'll also be gaining a friend and contributing to the Red Cross Aged & Community Care team that supports older and vulnerable people across Australia through various volunteer-based programs.
Application Process
You will be required to undertake a National Police Check, organised through Red Cross. For more information about this opportunity, please contact the Aged & Community Care Workforce Team.
