This is a rare opportunity to take on a key leadership role within the Greyhound Welfare & Integrity Commission (GWIC) on a secondment basis, supporting an evolving landscape in the greyhound racing industry. GWIC is seeking a Director, Legal & Policy (Corporate Counsel) to lead its Legal and Policy division. This role is pivotal in providing high-level legal expertise, strategic leadership, and policy direction, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, including the Greyhound Racing Act 2017 and the Greyhound Code of Practice.This secondment is available until the end of May 2025, with the possibility of extension as GWIC undergoes structural and leadership changes. About the Role: As Director, Legal & Policy (Corporate Counsel), you will: Advise and lead: Serve as Corporate Counsel, providing expert legal guidance to the Commissioners and CEO Shape policy and reform: Oversee policy development and legislative initiatives to support industry-wide integrity and best practices Manage complex legal matters: Ensure GWIC operates within a sound legal framework by providing high-level legal advice on administrative law, statutory interpretation, and compliance. Lead a high-performing team: Oversee a multi-disciplinary legal, policy, and projects team, fostering a culture of excellence, professionalism, and collaboration. Engage key stakeholders: Work closely with government agencies, regulators, and industry participants, providing strategic legal leadership in a high-profile sector Identify and manage risk: Proactively assess and mitigate legal and policy risks, ensuring robust governance and regulatory compliance What We're Looking For: We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled legal leader who brings: Legal expertise: Admission as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of NSW with a current, unrestricted practicing certificate Legislative knowledge: Strong understanding of NSW and Commonwealth legislation, including the Greyhound Racing Act 2017, Privacy Act 1988, and Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1979. Strategic leadership: Demonstrated ability to lead legal and policy functions, drive industry reform, and manage complex legal frameworks. Stakeholder engagement: Experience influencing senior stakeholders, regulatory bodies, and government agencies. Team leadership: Proven success in leading high-performing legal teams in a complex regulatory environment. Regulatory and compliance experience: Ability to navigate compliance, governance, and industry best practices in a politically sensitive environment. Given the highly regulated nature of this role, experience in public sector legal practice, government agencies, or regulatory bodies is essential. This role may require occasional travel and work outside of standard business hours to attend meetings and key hearings.
