We are seeking an experienced engineering inspector for the Road & Bridge Division.This position is located in Mount Isa, QLD, and will manage and perform construction engineering and inspection services on projects related to resurfacing, water quality, stormwater drainage, sidewalk, bridge maintenance, and other various maintenance programs for the division.Illustrative Duties Note: These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed.The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position .Responsible for inspecting a variety of public works projects such as roadway construction, drainage structures, and bridges.The employee ordinarily works alone and is expected to carry out detailed inspections as assigned by the immediate supervisor concerning plans, specifications, and construction procedures.Will initially be assigned under the supervision of Senior Engineering Inspectors to gain knowledge and insight into County standards for construction.Increasing responsibility will be assigned following demonstration of skill and knowledge to manage more complicated construction projects.Knowledge of the principles, methods, materials, and equipment common to public works construction such as highways, sidewalks, bridges, drainage structures, etc.Checks grades on construction projects by using a string line or level for a proper grade.Checks soils for proper compactions as required by plans and specifications.Checks layout and grade on construction projects requiring the use of a transit and level.Assists in the inspection of asphalt, concrete, and soils.Makes written reports to superiors as to job progress and percentage of completion on projects and keeps an up-to-date diary of the daily operations of the contractor.Manage and verify contractor pay requests and quantities.Assists Contractors and Engineers in interpreting County plans and specifications.Makes independent investigations of complaints received by public works concerning various situations such as flooding, pavement conditions, right of way encroachments, etc., and makes recommendations as to validity and solution.Reviews construction plans related to Use and Development Permit applications for consistency with Volusia County Code of Ordinances.May be assigned to other county locations based upon operational needs.Attendees work on a regular and consistent basis.Must adhere to Federal, State, County and Local ordinances.Responds to emergency situations.Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Requirements Graduation from high school or possession of a GED and four (4) years of experience in public works roadway construction, stormwater, utilities construction, or related fields, including layout and grade pavement conditions, and similar situations.A comparable amount of education, training, or experience may be substituted for the minimum requirements Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge of the principles of civil engineering as they relate to public works construction projects.Knowledge of the principles, methods, materials, and equipment common to general public works construction such as highways, sidewalks, bridges, drainage structures, etc.Knowledge of various road building materials such as lime rock, soil cement, and asphalt in base courses used for highway construction.Knowledge of storm sewer construction such as pipe laying, curb and gutter, inlet, and headwalls.Ability to read and interpret a variety of blueprints, plans, and specifications pertaining to public works projects.Ability to make detailed technical inspections and to control assigned projects from commencement to final inspection and acceptance.Ability to perform various tests for compaction, bearing values, and percolation of soils.Ability to supervise asphalt construction as related to highway paving operations.Knowledgeable in report writing and skilled in spreadsheet data entry and calculations.Ability to perform math calculations relating to percentages, measurements, and volumetric quantities.
