NTAIC is a corporate Commonwealth entity, established under the Aboriginal Land Rights Act (Northern Territory) 1976, and designed in partnership with Aboriginal Territorians. Our purpose is to work with Aboriginal Territorians to achieve economic, social and cultural impact through innovative approaches to investments, beneficial payments and other financial assistance. To support this, we have initial grant funding of $180 million and an investment corpus of $500 million. Our Aboriginal-controlled board share a vision of self-determination, with Aboriginal Territorians at the centre of NTAIC's work. Position Purpose: This role is responsible for contributing to NTAIC’s strategic objectives through the provision of expert legal advice ensuring the ongoing protection of NTAIC’s interests. The General Counsel provides a full suite of legal services to NTAIC, including but not limited to legislative interpretation and compliance, tendering, leases and licences, contract and workplace law, dispute resolution, commercial transactions, brand and intellectual property rights, occupational health and safety and insurance and liability issues. Key responsibilities include: •Provide advice on legal matters relating to policy and programmatic areas across NTAIC, including corporate, grants and investments functions. •Represent NTAIC in legal proceedings and mediations, in conjunction with external legal counsel when/as appropriate.•Provide advice and support to the NTAIC Board and its Committees on legal and governance matters; •Build legal and commercial awareness and contract literacy within NTAIC, and maintain and enhance template agreements across the business.•Build and manage relationships with outsourced legal services. •Undertake other tasks relevant to NTAIC’s legal functions as required. Demonstrated experience providing legal advice at a senior level, including extensive experience in drafting, negotiating, and advising on a variety of commercial transactions and effectively managing legal service providers.
Ability to independently analyse complex legal issues and develop practical legal solutions and advice.
Demonstrated knowledge of NTAIC's key regulatory regimes, including the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976 and the Public Governance, Performance and Accountability Act 2013.
Demonstrated cultural capability and understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal people in the Northern Territory.
Excellent communication skills with the ability to distil complex concepts and issues clearly and concisely to a variety of audiences.
Strong problem solving, analytical skills, and strategic thinking with the ability to be flexible and adaptable in the face of changing organisational priorities.
Essential criteria include:
Tertiary qualifications in law.
Minimum 8 years post qualification experience.
Current Australian practising certificate authorising practice as a solicitor
