What is our Senior Speech Pathologist role?
The Senior Speech Pathologist working at the Neurosciences Unit is a member of the multi-disciplinary team (MDT) in three adult clinics, namely the state-wide service for Huntington’s disease, Young Onset Dementia and the Adult Neurocognitive Assessment Clinic.
The Neurosciences Unit is a community-based service where the Senior Speech Pathologist has the flexibility to see patients in the outpatient clinic or in the community/home environment. The MDT comprising of Neurology, Psychiatry, Social Work and Neuropsychology works closely together to support our patients, families and support people. We are the state-wide consultative service and support external speech pathologists and agencies to manage their patients with complex progressive neurological conditions.
Priorities for Senior Speech Pathologist in the next 6-12 months include:
* Assessing, reviewing and managing the swallowing and communication needs of our patients with Huntington’s disease and Young Onset Dementia;
* Conducting high-level speech and language assessments (often in partnership with the neuropsychologist) with the view of providing diagnostic clarification to a referrer regarding specific conditions including Alzheimer’s disease and Primary Progressive Aphasia;
* Advocacy and liaison with external stakeholders such as the NDIS providers and Huntington’s Australia to help support our clients.
