Derby District High School (DHS) is located in Derby which is situated at the southern end of King Sound in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. Derby is 220km east of Broome by road and is 2463km north of Perth. It was the first town settled in the Kimberley. Derby is well supported with a range of government infrastructures. Its location near the King Sound and a number of rivers provides for many boating and fishing recreational activities - but not swimming!
Derby District High School is located in attractive and well-maintained grounds and surroundings. With an enrolment of over 600 students, it provides an education program for students from Kindergarten to Year 12. Students attend the school from the town of Derby and outlying areas including the Aboriginal Communities of Mowanjum and Pandanus Park. Students in Years 11 and 12 have access to a range of programs leading to secondary graduation. VET programs are offered in the school and in partnership with the local TAFE campus. The school has a very successful trade entry program and students are keen to trial employment and supported to connect with local trades. Subjects leading to university entrance are either delivered by school staff through a Uni-Prep course or through the School of Isolated and Distance Education.

The Role
Derby DHS has a well-established Visual Arts program. The incoming teacher would ensure that programs continue to engage and challenge students. They should also provide students with opportunities to showcase their achievements at school and in the wider community.
The successful applicant would ideally have excellent interpersonal skills and will be capable of creating high quality, effective teaching and learning experiences for students in Visual Arts. As Derby DHS is a Positive Behaviour Support (SSPBiS) school, the desire to invest in developing positive working relationships with students, parents, colleagues, and the local community is a key focus for Derby DHS staff. The successful applicant will ideally be able to teach Visual Arts across Years 7- 12. They should also be able to use Visual Arts as a vehicle for teaching problem solving, collaboration, communication, critical and creative thinking skills to students.

Mobility appointments for permanent metropolitan and south west teachers
Eligible permanent teachers who hold a substantive teaching position in a North or South Education Region school, or a South West Education Region school* may elect to undertake this role as a 3-year mobility appointment, with a right of return to their substantive position. At the cessation of the 3-year mobility appointment, teachers can elect to return to their substantive role, or transfer permanently into this school.
