Primary objective Provide technical support for the collection, processing and analysis of biological, fishery and research data, and assist with on board and electronic monitoring for coastal fisheries observation trips. Context statement This position undertakes off shore field trips for extended periods of time aboard commercial fishing vessels, conducts shorter trips aboard Fishing Tour Operator vessels, and undertakes land or sea based remote field work to obtain biological samples and data that underpins the scientific advice on the state of the Northern Territory’s fisheries and other aquatic resources. Additionally, the position provides technical support for the processing, analysis, biological sampling and reporting of data collected. The position acts as a link between fishers and scientists, keeping the fishing industry informed of any research being undertaken and ensuring cooperation in monitoring and data collection. The ability to liaise with all stakeholders in a professional manner is paramount. Key duties and responsibilities 1. Assist with the logistics for observer trips and liaison of vessel owners and skippers to ensure the required number of trips are completed each year. 2. Conduct laboratory and field work including species identification, dissections and the preparation of collected samples (including otoliths) for analysis. 3. Maintain detailed and accurate records of biological data and prepare field and technical reports. 4. Undertake additional duties and responsibilities as directed. Selection criteria Essential 1. Diploma/Certificate in fisheries biology/ecology or similar, or equivalent experience. 2. Working knowledge of and experience in biological collection and sampling techniques and field work coordination, preferably in a fisheries context. 3. An understanding of fishing industry issues and practices and experience liaising with stakeholders, or ability to acquire. 4. Experience in field and laboratory operations including time at sea, accurate and timely data entry skills, and ability to prepare and maintain detailed records under minimal supervision. 5. Demonstrated initiative, organisational skills and ability to meet deadlines. 6. Sound oral and written communication skills. Desirable 1. Basic mechanical aptitude. 2. Knowledge of Northern Territory waters and ability to identify key Northern Territory fish species. 3. A coxswain certificate and ability to operate vessels up to 12m in length. 4. NT Driver’s license and four wheel drive experience.
