About the Role
An exciting opportunity exists for an experienced Environmental Professional to join the Environment Team within our WAIO Rail Operations. In this newly created role, you will be one of two Rail Environmental Specialists and will have the opportunity to work alongside two Port Environmental Specialists at our Nelson Point facility in Port Hedland. While you will be primarily based at Nelson Point, you will have the opportunity to work across WAIO’s Rail Network, from Port Hedland to Newman.
This role is being offered as Fly-In-Fly-Out (5 days on, 2 days off, 4 days on, 3 days off) from Perth. While, flexible roster options may be considered, this role will be entirely site-based (with some requirement to work in our Perth office) to ensure quality support for the operation. Reporting to the Environment Superintendent (Environment North), you will be responsible for oversight and governance of a range of environmental management outcomes, coaching on effective environmental risk management, and provision of technical expertise to grow environmental capability in operational leaders.
As the successful candidate in this role, you will:
* Help line leaders to understand their environmental risks and obligations, and implement effective controls to manage these risks;
* Drive continuous improvement in environmental management performance through ongoing engagement with operational personnel, encouraging and coaching quality field verifications of environmental management controls;
* Participate and coach as an environmental subject matter expert in risk register reviews, risk assessments, and environment event investigations;
* Collect and report environmental monitoring and performance data;
* Utilise work management to administrate environmental approval obligations and meet reporting timeframes for event and compliance reporting;
* Identify opportunities to streamline approvals to enable operations, and facilitate the Management of Change (MoC) process for new/amended approvals;
* Supervise contractors involved in the safe and productive execution of environment monitoring programs managed work.
* Connect and collaborate with a broad range of stakeholders to support the development and delivery of improvement initiatives and regulatory approvals
* Apply the BHP Charter Values through your interactions with team members and line partners on a daily basis
About You
This role will suit a highly capable team player who is motivated to collaborate with site, your immediate team and the broader range of WAIO stakeholders to ensure environmental risks at the operation are effectively managed.
You understand the value of being in-field and the power of coaching and upskilling operational leaders and frontline to improve environmental risk management. You will be a confident, self-motivated professional with environmental management experience either within heavy industry, or a similar role within a different industry. Your communication and engagement skills will be strong and you will have a solid record of achieving results through influence, coaching and mentoring. You may have formal qualifications in Environmental Management / Science or a related field, however it will be your attitude, character and a passion for improving environmental outcomes that sets you apart from the crowd.
You will also have:
* Experience or a quick learner with Environment management systems
* Previously used Geospatial applications such as GIS ArcMap
* You will be passionate about the environment and enjoy sharing that passion with others
* You will be able to interpret data and legal obligations and communicate this to others in a simple manner that enables them to take action
* Tertiary qualifications in Environmental Management Science or a related field would be an advantage
* Knowledge of Environmental Protection Act Part IV and V frameworks and approval pathways is advantageous.
