About the Role
The Domestic and Family Violence Counsellors are responsible for providing a range of Domestic and Family Violence services to adults experiencing ( or at risk of experiencing ) domestic and family violence.
Key aspects of the role include:
1. Providing therapeutic intervention counselling services with a focus on families and individuals impacted by domestic family violence, intimate partner violence (IPV), trauma, and other relevant presenting comorbidities.
2. Participate in the development and implementation of psycho-educational programs relevant to families and individuals impacted by domestic and family violence.
3. Participate in the implementation of service systems and collaborative activities to educate and build the capacity of local community members to respond and foster confidence and understanding of behaviours relating to the “cycle of violence.”
4. Contribute to crisis responses with a collaborative approach, including completion of risk assessments, safety planning, relevant referrals, Domestic Family Violence orders, housing, and financial assistance, and supporting clients experiencing domestic family violence.
5. Counsellors must ensure they provide services in accordance with relevant funding guidelines and standards, including but not limited to Domestic Family Violence practice standards, best practice principles, ethical responsibilities, and CatholicCare's organisational policies and procedures.
Qualifications and Experience
* Minimum requirement: Accredited Diploma of Counselling AQF level 5 and 1-2 years relevant experience working within the Domestic & Family Violence environment.
* Proof of Membership and ability to maintain membership to one of the following professional associations: ACA Christian Counsellors of Australia, QLD Counsellors Association, Australian Community Counselling Association Inc – professional membership, ACWA, AASW and or APS.
* A current C or CA class Driver’s license (QLD).
Core Competencies
* Ability to provide client assessments and safety and risk assessments, safety planning and therapeutic intervention counselling in accordance with the Domestic and Family Violence Protection Act 2012.
* In-depth knowledge of trauma-informed practice and attachments relating to domestic family violence within family systems.
* Ability to quickly build rapport and work collaboratively with diverse teams and or autonomously as required.
* Demonstrated ability to implement client outcome measures in accordance with service guidelines, funding accountability, ethical responsibilities, and best practice principles.
* Competent in delivering psychoeducational group programs.
* Knowledge of Critical Incident response.
Other requirements
* Understanding of the confidentiality practice within the child protection and domestic and family violence legislation.
* Ability to work within the legal limitations around the right to confidentiality and privacy.
* Knowledge of the issues affecting families and individuals who may be experiencing domestic and family violence, child abuse, trauma-informed practice, suicidal ideation, and self-harm.
