The branch consists of three legal teams, including the Human Rights Team whose practice focus on human rights under Victoria's Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities Act 2006. The day-to-day work of the team includes:preparing statements of compatibility for Bills introduced in Parliamentadvising public authorities on their human rights obligationsproviding advice in relation to legislative reform projects and policy developmentmanaging litigation matters that raise Charter issuesThe team also works on related public law matters including administrative law, anti-discrimination law and statutory interpretation.About the roleAn exciting opportunity has become available for a lawyer with at least 2+ years post admission practicing experience, seeking to continue or advance their career in human rights law.You will have the opportunity to provide legal advice to, and conduct litigation for, State government departments and public entities on a range of complex and interesting matters within the team's area of practice. In this role you will work collaboratively with your colleagues as part of a tightly knit team.Skills and experienceComprehensive knowledge and experience in the principles and practice of public lawExperience and/or knowledge of human rights law, including familiarity with the Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities Act 2006 and relevant case law, is essentialExperience providing comprehensive written and oral legal advice which is fit for purposeThe ability to conduct complex and sensitive proceedings in state and federal courts/tribunalsExperience acting for government or statutory corporations would be highly desirableExperience with policy development and legislative reform projects would be desirableA minimum of 2 years post admission practicing experienceVGSO offers an inclusive, collegiate and collaborative work environment where you will be well-supported and mentored to develop your knowledge.
