Remote Alcohol and Other Drug Workforce
Alice Springs / Yuendumu
Two fixed vacancies for 12 months
One vacancy in Alice Springs and one in Yuendumu
Expand your professional experience by engaging with remote communities and applying culturally appropriate assessments and therapeutic interventions.
NT Health's Alcohol and Other Drug Services Central Australia (ADSCA) is a specialist, multi-disciplinary service that provides treatment and support to individuals, families and communities in the areas of alcohol and other drugs (AOD), mental health (MH) and social emotional wellbeing (SEWB).
Currently, ADSCA has vacancies for experienced Social Workers in both Alice Springs and Yuendumu locations as Community Counsellors. These positions are federally funded until the end of June 2025 when additional funding is expected.
As a Community Counsellor (P3), your primary objective is to provide holistic, trauma-informed, evidence-based clinical counselling and support to patients in remote communities, utilising a social emotional wellbeing framework.
Your key duties include managing a complex caseload, undertaking effective case management, and engaging with remote communities to build trusted relationships and resolve potential conflicts. You will also have the opportunity to participate in and facilitate AOD education and professional development for RAOD Workers and Public Health Care staff.
Ideally, you will be an accomplished Social Worker or Psychologist looking for an opportunity to experience supporting remote Aboriginal communities and developing sustainable solutions that improve the health and wellbeing of its members.
To be successful, you need to be an accredited Social Worker with recognised qualifications in Social Work or Psychology and eligible for membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW), Australian Community Workers Association (ACWA), Australian Psychological Society (APS), Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), or a Counsellor with recognised qualifications at a postgraduate level and eligibility for membership of a peak counselling body.
Demonstrated experience in AOD and/or MH and social emotional cultural wellbeing assessment, treatment, and therapeutic support is essential, supported by a strong understanding of the neurobiology and impact of trauma and community engagement.
In return, you will enjoy the benefits of a competitive salary with salary packaging options, six weeks recreational and three weeks personal leave, 17.5% annual leave loading, and an opportunity to experience the benefits of developing a career in the NT Public Sector.
This is a great time to consider moving to Central Australia. Treat yourself to an enviable lifestyle and a work-life balance that allows you time to explore the stunning landscapes of the MacDonnell Ranges or Red Centre Desert, Aboriginal rock art, and the spectacular storms and rainfalls. The rich multicultural society and community spirit make Central Australia a great place to live, work, and play.
