This Position: The Assistant Manager is responsible for supporting the store's daily operations, including overseeing staff, managing inventory, assisting customers, and ensuring a welcoming and organised shopping environment.
Role Duties and Responsibilities
Customer Service Management:
* Ensure high standards of customer service are maintained.
* Handle complex customer inquiries, complaints, and issues.
Sales and Merchandising:
* Operating the cash register, handling cash, credit card payments, and providing receipts.
* Support the Store Manager in achieving sales targets and maximizing profitability.
* Oversee the implementation of merchandising strategies and promotional activities.
* Monitor sales performance and suggest improvements.
Staff Supervision:
* Assist in recruiting, training, and supervising store staff.
Inventory and Stock Control:
* Manage inventory levels to ensure adequate stock while minimizing excess.
* Oversee receiving, unpacking, and stocking of merchandise.
* Conduct regular inventory audits and resolve discrepancies.
* Manage stock returns process, including picking, packing and shipping of returns.
* Assist in preventing theft by closely monitoring the store, identifying vulnerable areas, and implementing effective loss prevention strategies.
* Ensure accurate cash handling and financial reporting.
Store Operations:
* Maintain a clean, organized, and safe store environment.
* Ensure compliance with health, safety, and security regulations.
* Oversee the maintenance and upkeep of store facilities.
Marketing and Community Engagement:
* Support marketing initiatives and community outreach programs.
* Organize and participate in store events and book signings.
* Build and maintain relationships with local schools, libraries, and community groups.
Qualifications, Competencies & Experience
* Minimum of 2-5 years of experience in a retail environment, with at least 1 year in a supervisory or management role.
* Strong leadership and team management skills.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
* Proficiency in using retail management software and point-of-sale (POS) systems.
* Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays.
* Ability to lift and carry up to 15 kg.
Preferred
* Previous experience in a bookshop or related industry.
* A passion for books and reading.
* Knowledge of current literature and trends in the book industry.
* Experience with inventory management systems.
